Changes after 1971
Over time, registration offices have been closed or reopened. This resulted in retransmissions or transmissions of groups of letters. The following information relates to the allocation of labels for the general series.
- In the province of Østfold, the offices in Sarpsborg (initially) and Fredrikstadt were closed. A new office was opened in Hafslund. This assigns the letter pairs according to the old division, taking into account the old jurisdiction limit.
- In the province of Akershus there was a new division of the registration offices:
- The letter pairs BC, BD, BE, BH, BJ and BK are administered by Drøbak (Follo).
- The letter pairs BL, BN, BP, BR, BS, BT, BU, BV, BX, BY, BZ, CA and CB are managed by Asker and Bærum (Billingstad).
- The letter pairs CB, CC, CE, CF, CH, CJ, CK, CL, CN, CP, CR, CS, CT and CU are managed by Romerike (Lillestrøm).

- In 1999, a second registration office for Setesdal was set up in Aust-Agder province. She was given the pair of letters PL.
- In the province of Rogaland, the new registration office was opened in Egersund around 1984. The letter groups RZ, SA and SB were assigned to her.

General series
The two-letter and five-digit number plates are assigned to cars and trucks. Usually they are white with black lettering. Green marks with black letters are so-called varebil marks. Varebil means goods car. These vehicles are tax-privileged. However, you can also use the Varebil license plate privately for your car. This does not mean a tax break.
Vehicles participating in rally events use black license plates with white letters and numbers. Driving on public roads is only permitted when taking part in a rally, driving to and from the rally and from and to organized training. These vehicles are exempt from the enormously high registration tax (hence the usage restrictions).
Vehicles that are not allowed to be used on public roads but are insured and registered are given license plates with a black background and yellow lettering. These include, for example, various types of vehicles at airports, in port areas, etc. These vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax and have therefore not been issued any badges in the past. All vehicles on Svalbard also get this type of license plate, as there are only private roads / roads and these islands are exempt from the enormous registration tax. In this case, the inscription begins with ZN . Vehicles that are sold from Spitsbergen to mainland Norway also keep their registration number, but after they have been cleared, they will be exchanged for the mainland's corresponding different colored license plates. This also applies to tax-exempt temporary imports ("vacation").
The combination of digits shows the month in which the vehicle has to go to the EU inspection, formerly known as Periodisk Kjøretøykontroll (comparable to the German general inspection). The last digit stands for the corresponding month, with two exceptions. The number 7 stands for November, as no vehicle has to be checked in the EU in July and December, and the number 0 instead of 10 is provided for October.
1971 until today
The registration area can be recognized from the license plate. For vehicles with electric drive, with gas drive, with hydrogen drive and for former military vehicles, there is a nationwide allocation of license plates.
The number after the approval district and behind the drive type provides information about the order in which the approval letters (let.) Were / will be issued.

Diplomatic plates
These license plates have yellow letters on a light blue background. They consist of the letter pair CD followed by a five- (cars and trucks) or four-digit number. The first two digits indicate the country of origin. The diplomatic missions of Israel, the United Kingdom, and the United States now also use civilian plates.
Diplomatic codes
1 Since 2001/02 these states have been using normal license plates from Oslo.

Export indicator
License plates for the export of brand new vehicles or for tourists only show four or five (depending on the type of vehicle) black digits on a white background. The number plate is limited on both sides by a red bar indicating the maximum validity (month on the left, year on the right). Export license plates are issued by the Norwegian police. The first digit indicates the place of registration. The information relates to license plates with five digits.
