The article provides a detailed account of the Taiwanese national soccer team for women at world championships . The Republic of China has only been able to qualify for the first women's World Cup and started there as “Chinese Taipei”. The team finished 18th in the all-time table before the 2015 World Cup - for which the team could not qualify - as the best team with only one participation and the worst team that won at least one World Cup game. Thanks to the good performances of Colombia and South Korea as well of four newcomers, the team slipped to 24th place. In 2019 the team lost another place.

The Republic of China and Nigeria were the first countries from which women were able to qualify for a World Cup finals. In addition, the women from the People's Republic of China were automatically qualified as hosts as early as 1991 , although they were also able to qualify in sports before the men from the People's Republic of China qualified for the 2002 World Cup. Besides Equatorial Guinea and now Thailand, the Republic of China is the only country from which only women have qualified for a World Cup so far.

The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

Since the first women's World Cup was held in the People's Republic of China , the Chinese women did not have to qualify. Nevertheless, the team took part in the Asian women's soccer championship in 1991 , which served as a qualification for the other Asian teams. Therefore, the team from the Republic of China met the team from the People's Republic of China at the Asian Cup and lost to them 3-0. With a 9-0 win against South Korea and a 0-0 win against Thailand , the Republic of China reached the semifinals in front of the Thai women with the same number of points due to the better goal difference than second in the group. Here they lost 4-5 on penalties against Japan after a goalless game . No goals were scored in the game for third place against North Korea , but this time the penalty shoot-out was won, also 5-4. The Republic of China thus qualified for the World Cup. The People's Republic of China became Asian champions with a total of five victories, which would also have been athletically qualified.

At the final round, the Republic of China was drawn into a group with European champions Germany , Italy and Africa champions Nigeria . On November 17, 1991, they played their first World Cup game against Italy in Jiangmen and lost 5-0. Against Germany a 0-2 result followed, but with a 2-0 despite being outnumbered by 84 minutes against Nigeria, the third place was taken. As the second-best group third before Brazil , the Republic of China reached the quarter-finals. Here the team met the eventual world champions USA and lost 7-0. The Republic of China thus said goodbye to the World Cup stage for at least 32 years.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Three years later, the Republic of China failed to qualify for the World Cup, which took place on European soil for the first time. The Asian Games in Hiroshima in 1994 served as qualification . Japan, the Republic of China, the People's Republic of China and South Korea met in a group of four. After a 0: 5 against the People's Republic of China and a 0: 3 against Japan, they had no chance to qualify, as only the two best Asian teams went to the World Cup. The 2-0 win in the last game against South Korea was therefore no longer relevant for qualification, but brought the bronze medal at the Asian Games. The two finalists Japan and the People's Republic of China went to the World Cup. The Republic of China also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games , in which only the eight best teams from the World Cup could take part.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

The Republic of China was also unable to qualify for the third World Cup. The number of starting places for the Asian teams was increased to 3 after the field of participants was increased to 16 teams, but the Republic of China only took fourth place in the 1997 Asian women's football championship . After two preliminary round victories against South Korea (1-0) and Kazakhstan (6-0), the team met the People's Republic of China in the semi-finals and went down 0:10. In the small final they lost 2-0 to Japan, which qualified for the World Cup alongside the two finalists North Korea and the People's Republic of China. The Republic of China also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games , in which, in addition to hosts Australia, only the seven best teams from the World Cup could take part.

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. But the Asians now had four starting places. The Republic of China had to qualify at the 2003 Asian Cup, which again served as a qualification . However, they failed in the group stage to Japan and Myanmar . Because after two wins against Guam (2: 1) and the Philippines (4: 0) they lost 5-0 against Japan and only 1-1 against Myanmar. So they were tied with Myanmar only third in the group. Second place was also not enough for Myanmar, because of the two runners-up in the group of five, only the better team made it through and that was South Korea. South Korea qualified for the World Cup for the first time.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . The 2006 Asian women's soccer championship served as qualification , for which the Republic of China qualified with two wins against India (2: 1) and Guam (11: 0) and a 3: 0 in the playoffs against Singapore . As the host, the People's Republic of China qualified for the World Cup, but took part in the Asian Cup. The Republic of China met them in the group stage and lost their first game 2-0. But the other group games against Japan and Vietnam were also lost. This eliminated the Republic of China as the bottom of the group.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The Republic of China, but also for the first time the People's Republic of China, could not qualify for the World Cup in Germany . At the 2010 Asian Women's Football Championship , which took place in the People's Republic of China, the People's Republic of China could not use the home advantage and only came in fourth. The Republic of China, on the other hand, could not qualify for it because in the second qualifying round at a tournament in Tainan , the home advantage could not be used either. Both games against Jordan and Myanmar were lost: 0: 1 and 2: 5 respectively. The Chinese then had to watch from a distance as Japan became the first Asian team to become world champions.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Even four years later, the Republic of China could not qualify for the Asian Cup . At a tournament in Al-Ram in the West Bank , the first game against Palestine was won 6-0 and India was defeated 2-1. But against Myanmar it was only enough to score 0-0. Since Myanmar had won against the other two higher, Myanmar qualified for the Asian Cup, which served as a qualification for the World Cup in Canada. Myanmar failed there in the preliminary round. Instead, Thailand benefited from the fact that the Asians were now given five starting positions after the increase in the field of participants, and qualified fifth for the World Cup finals for the first time.

World Cup 2019 in France

Four years later, the Republic of China could not qualify for the Asian Cup either . Again she was drawn to a group that had to host a tournament in Al-Ram in the West Bank , but from which the registered teams from Guam and Lebanon did not take part. And like four years before, the first game against Palestine was won, but there was a 1-0 defeat against the second group opponent Thailand, so that only the second group place behind Thailand was occupied. Due to the non-qualification for the World Cup finals, the team fell one place in the all-time table .

Games

The Republic of China has played four World Cup games so far. One of them was won and three lost, none ended in a draw. The Republic of China never played the opening game and never played against the hosts, but once against the eventual world champions.

The Republic of China has played against teams from three confederations and against the champions from Europe, North and Central America and Africa.

Most of the games were played by eight players who were used in all four games. The only World Cup goals for the Republic of China were scored by Mei Chun Lin and Tai Ying Chou (1 each).
