Amos Townsend (*  1821 in Brownsville , Fayette County , Pennsylvania , †  17th March 1895 in St. Augustine , Florida ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1883 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 20th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Amos Townsend was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1821. An exact date of birth is not known. In Pittsburgh he attended public schools. In 1839 he moved to Mansfield , where he worked as a businessman. He later worked for the United States Marshals Service . In 1858 he moved to Cleveland , where he worked in the supermarket business. Between 1866 and 1876 he was a member of the Cleveland City Council, including seven years as president.

1876 Townsend was first to the House of Representatives to Washington, DC selected. There he represented from then on the 20th constituency of Ohio. In 1878 and 1880 he successfully defended his seat. From 1881 he was chairman of the Committee on Railways and Canals in the House . He refused to be elected again in 1882 . He ultimately left the House in 1883 . After his political career, he worked again as a businessman. He died during a visit to St. Augustine in 1895. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
