John G. Cooper (1918)

John Gordon Cooper (* 27 April 1872 in Wigan , England , † 7. January 1955 in Hagerstown , Maryland ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . March 4, 1915 to March 3, 1937, he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 19th  congressional district of the state of Ohio .

biography

Born in Wigan, England in 1872, he emigrated to the USA with his parents in 1880. They settled in Youngstown . There he then attended the local public schools. In 1885, after finishing school, he hired himself out as a worker in a steel mine. In 1896 he moved to the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company . He worked there until 1915 as a stoker on steam locomotives and as an engineer.

Cooper became active in local politics as early as 1906. He served on the county committee. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1910 to 1912 . From 1915 he represented the 19th electoral district of Ohio in the US House of Representatives for 10 legislative terms. In 1937 he left after unsuccessful re-election. He then withdrew into private life. From 1937 to 1945 he made another political appearance, this time as chairman of the Ohio Industrial Commission.

In 1947 he retired from politics entirely. Cooper died in Hagerstown in 1955. He was buried in Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
