William Moore McCulloch (born November 24, 1901 in Holmesville , Holmes County , Ohio , †  February 22, 1980 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1973 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William McCulloch attended public schools in his home country and then the College of Wooster . After a subsequent law degree at Ohio State University in Columbus and his admission to the bar in 1925, he began to work in this profession in Piqua . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1933 and 1944 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . From 1939 he was the successor to Frank R. Uible President ( Speaker ) of the house; between 1936 and 1939 he headed the Republican parliamentary group there. During the Second World War he served in the US Army between 1943 and 1945 .

After the resignation of MP Robert Franklin Jones , McCulloch was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1947 when the by-election was due for the fourth seat in Ohio. After twelve re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1973 . During this time, among other things, the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . McCulloch was a member of the Judiciary Committee and was instrumental in drawing up and enacting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 . Otherwise he took rather conservative positions. Towards the end of his time in Congress, however, he took up some liberal ideas; For example, in 1968 he supported an initiative to improve controls on gun ownership . In 1972 he renounced another congressional candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William McCulloch practiced again as a lawyer. He died on February 22, 1980 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia .
