Thomas Andrew "Tom" Luken (born July 9, 1925 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † January 10, 2018 ibid) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1974 to 1975, 1977 to 1991 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first and second  congressional districts of the State of Ohio.

biography

Tom Luken was born in Cincinnati. His high school Accounts he acquired in 1942 at the Purcell High School in his hometown. During World War II , he served in the United States Marine Corps . He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1947 from the Xavier University of Cincinnati . He graduated from Northern Kentucky University in 1950 with a law degree . He then practiced as a lawyer for the first time. From 1955 to 1961 he advised the City of Deer Park as a lawyer on legal matters. In 1961 he was appointed district attorney for the southern Ohio district, a position he held until 1964. A member of the Cincinnati City Council was Hatches from 1964 to 1967 and 1969 to 1974. During this time he was Mayor of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1972.

In 1974 Luken was elected in a special election to succeed the resigned William J. Keating as representative of the 1st District of Ohio in the US House of Representatives. Bill Gradison secured the seat of Luken in the 1974 regular congressional election . Luken ran successfully in 1976 in the 2nd district. Until 1983 he represented the 2nd district in Washington, in the congressional elections in 1982 Luken exchanged the district due to the 1980 census with Bill Gradison and again represented the 1st district until 1991. His son Charlie succeeded him.

His brother Jim Luken was mayor of Cincinnati, along with himself and his son. Luken lived in Cincinnati to the end.
