Jeannette Marie Hoffman "Jean" Schmidt (born November 29, 1951 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2005 to 2013, it was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the second  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Jean Schmidt was born in Cincinnati, one of four children of Augustus and Jeannette Hoffman. She has a twin sister, Jean Black. Her father was a banker. He later worked for a racing stable that also took part in the Indianapolis 500 . In 1974 she graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science . She then worked in the bank where her father also worked. She was one of the delegates from Ohio to the Republican National Convention in 1984. She also worked as a fitness trainer and teacher. She looked after her until her mother's death in 1990.

Schmidt began her political career in various municipal bodies. In 2000 she was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. In 2004 she wanted to move into the Ohio Senate as a senator , but she did not succeed. Instead, she was elected to the US House of Representatives as the successor to Rob Portman in a special election. Portman joined George W. Bush's cabinet as a commercial agent . She took office on September 6, 2005. She is a member of the Committee on Agriculture , the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure . Schmidt was able to defend her seat in the subsequent elections. In March 2012, however, she surprisingly lost her party's primary to the politically inexperienced doctor Brad Wenstrup , who was supported by tea party groups.

The devout Catholic lives in Loveland with her husband Peter . They both have a daughter.
