Henry Blackstone Banning (born November 10, 1836 in Bannings Mills , Knox County , Ohio , † December 10, 1881 in Cincinnati , Ohio) was an American politician of the Liberal Republican Party and later the Democratic Party . March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1879, he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the second  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Banning was born in Bannings Mills. He attended the Clinton District Schools, Mount Vernon Academy, and Kenyon College . He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1857. From then on he worked in Mount Vernon .

In April 1861 he joined the US Army as a soldier . In June 1861 he was promoted to captain . He then served as a Colonel from June 10 to September 20, 1862 . On October 4, 1862, he was honorably discharged from military service. On January 1, 1863, he entered the military again and was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the same time . At the end of military service, he was brevet to Major General appointed. On January 21, 1865 he finally resigned from military service.

After his return home, he was honored with various honorary military ranks. From 1866 to 1867 he gained his first political experience as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . In 1872, Banning was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Liberal Republican. From then on he represented the 2nd District of Ohio there. He was re-elected twice, but as a member of the Democratic Party. From 1875 until his retirement in 1879, Banning served as chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs . In 1878 he was no longer put up for election by his party. He retired to Ohio again, where he worked as a lawyer again.

Banning died in Cincinnati on December 10, 1881. He was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery . From 1868 he was married to Ida Kirby and fathered 4 children with her.
