Don Pease (1991)

Donald James "Don" Pease (born September 26, 1931 in Toledo , Ohio , †  July 28, 2002 in Oberlin , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1993 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Don Pease studied at Ohio University in Athens until 1953 . In 1954 and 1955 he continued his education at Kings College , which is part of the University of Durham in England . Between 1955 and 1957 he served in the US Army . He then worked as a journalist. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1962 to 1965 he was a member of the Oberlin City Council; between 1965 and 1967 and again from 1975 to 1977 he was a member of the Ohio Senate . In between he was a member of the House of Representatives there from 1969 to 1975 .

In the 1976 congressional election , Pease was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican Charles Adams Mosher on January 3, 1977 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . He campaigned for human rights around the world and in 1979 achieved a trade embargo against the state of Uganda , which was then ruled by the dictator Idi Amin . A few months later, the embargo contributed significantly to the overthrow of Amine. He also campaigned for workers' rights. In 1992 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Don Pease was visiting professor of politics at Oberlin College . He served on the Amtrak board of directors as a director for five years . He died on July 28, 2002 in Oberlin. He was married to Jeanne Camille Wendt, with whom he had a daughter born in 1964.
