Paul J. Sorg (1896)

Paul John Sorg (born September 23, 1840 in Wheeling , Virginia , †  May 28, 1902 in Middletown , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1894 and 1897 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia , Paul Sorg attended public schools in his homeland. In 1852 he came to Cincinnati , Ohio with his parents , where he attended night school. During the civil war he served in the Union army . He then worked in the tobacco business, where he was particularly responsible for finances and bookkeeping. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of the Congressman George W. Houk , Sorg was elected by-election for the third seat of Ohio as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on May 21, 1894. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1897 . In 1896 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Sorg moved to Middletown, where he resumed his previous activities. Among other things, he donated an opera house there. He also died in Middletown on May 28, 1902. He was married to Susan Gruver, with whom he had two children.
