John A. McDowell

John Anderson McDowell (born September 25, 1853 in Killbuck , Holmes County , Ohio , †  October 2, 1927 in Cleveland , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1901 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John McDowell attended his home public schools, Millersburg High School and Lebanon Normal College , also in Ohio. Between 1870 and 1877 he was a teacher in the public schools in his home country. He then headed Millersburg High School from 1877 to 1879 . From 1879 to 1896 he was the school councilor responsible for the schools in Millersburg . In between, he graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance in 1887 . In the following years he also worked in the school service. He taught at the College of Wooster from 1896 to 1917, with the interruption during his time in Congress . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1896 congressional election , McDowell was elected to the 17th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Addison S. McClure on March 4, 1897 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1900 McDowell was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, McDowell continued his career in education. From 1908 to 1927, in addition to his other duties in the school service, he was also a school councilor in Ashland . Between 1911 and 1922 he was the curator of the State Normal College in Kent . In 1921 he became president of the Northeastern Ohio Teachers 'Association and in 1926 of the Ohio State Teachers' Association . He also dealt with agricultural matters. He died in Cleveland on October 2, 1927 and was buried in Millersburg.
