William D. Hill (1897)

William David Hill (born October 1, 1833 in Nelson County , Virginia , †  December 26, 1906 in Litchfield , Illinois ) was an American politician . From 1879 to 1887 he twice represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Hill attended the public schools of his home country and then Antioch College . In 1858 he moved to Springfield , Ohio, where he edited the Ohio Press newspaper . After a subsequent law degree and his 1859 admission to the bar, he began to work in Springfield in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served as Mayor of Springfield from 1861 to 1863; from 1866 to 1870 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio . He also served on the Defiance City Education Committee . From 1875 to 1878 he was the Superintendent of Insurance in charge of insurance in Ohio. In the years 1880 and 1888 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the congressional election of 1878 Hill was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Jacob Dolson Cox on March 4, 1879 . Until March 3, 1881, he could initially only complete one legislative period in Congress . In the elections of 1882 he was re-elected to Congress in the sixth district of his state, where he replaced James M. Ritchie on March 4, 1883 , who had succeeded him two years earlier. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1887. From 1885 he was chairman of the Committee on Territories . In 1886 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Hill practiced as a lawyer in Defiance. From 1891 to 1896 he lived in Kalispell ( Montana ). He then returned to Defiance, where he continued to work as a lawyer. From 1903 to 1905 he also acted as the city's legal representative. He died in Illinois on December 26, 1906, en route to Los Angeles , and was buried in Defiance.
