Robert "Rob" Jones Portman (* 19th December 1955 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Republican Party , both deputy in the US House of Representatives as well as sales representatives in the United States and director of the Office of Management and Budget was. He has been a Senator for Ohio in the United States Senate since January 2011 .

biography

After attending the Cincinnati Country Day School , he studied anthropology at Dartmouth College , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts ( BA Anthropology ) in 1979 . A post-graduate studies of law at the University of Michigan , he finished 1984 with a Juris Doctor (JD). While still a student, he was a member of the voluntary advisory committee of the National Student Leadership Conference and a board member of Jobs for America's Graduates . Between 1984 and 1986 he was initially a lawyer with the law firm Patton Boggs .

In 1989 he joined the government as a White House employee . There he initially acted as associate legal advisor to US President George Bush and then from 1989 to 1991 as deputy assistant and then director of the Office of Legislative Affairs . In 1993 he was elected as a Republican candidate in a by-election to succeed the resigned Bill Gradison in the US House of Representatives. After several re-elections, he represented there from May 4, 1993 until his resignation on April 29, 2005, the second congressional constituency of Ohio.

After his departure from Congress, he was appointed on April 29, 2005 by US President George W. Bush as a trade representative for the United States ( Trade Representative ) in his cabinet . After a government reshuffle, he was appointed Director of the Bureau for Management and Budget on May 29, 2006 and held this cabinet post until August 3, 2007. He then moved to the private sector .

In the election for the 2nd US Senate seat for Ohio in November 2010, he was the Republican candidate to succeed the no longer running Republican incumbent George Voinovich and won it against the Democratic lieutenant governor of Ohio , Lee Fisher . Since he was re-elected in 2016, he will represent his state in the US Senate for the next six years. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.
