George W. Wilson

George Washington Wilson (born February 22, 1840 in Brighton , Clark County , Ohio , †  November 27, 1909 in London , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Wilson attended public schools in his home country and then Antioch College in Yellow Springs . Between 1862 and 1865 he served in various units in the Union Army during the Civil War . He achieved the rank of captain. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1866, he began to work in this profession in London. Between 1866 and 1870 he was a prosecutor in Madison County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1871 and 1874 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives; from 1877 to 1881 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1892 Wilson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat William E. Haynes on March 4, 1893 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1897 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. In June 1896 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in St. Louis , at which William McKinley was nominated as a candidate for president. He was also Mayor of New London and again prosecutor for Madison County. George Wilson died on November 27, 1909 in London, where he was also buried.
