Elias Howell

Elias Howell (* 1792 in New Jersey , † May 1844 in Newark , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1835 and 1837 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about Elias Howell's life beyond politics. His life data are also given incomplete in the sources. He attended the public schools in his home country. In 1819 he moved to Newark, Ohio. In the 1820s he joined the movement against later President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Whig Party , which was founded in the 1830s . Between 1830 and 1832 he was a member of the Ohio Senate .

In the congressional election of 1834 Howell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Robert Mitchell on March 4, 1835 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1836, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1837 . This was determined by the discussions about President Jackson's policies. Elias Howell died in Newark in May 1844. His son James (1816-1880) became a US Senator for the state of Iowa .
