James H. Southard

James Harding Southard (born January 20, 1851 in Toledo , Ohio , †  February 20, 1919 there ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1907 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Southard attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1874 at Cornell University in Ithaca ( New York ). After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1877, he began to work in this profession in Toledo. In 1882, he became assistant district attorney in Lucas County . After that he was the actual prosecutor there for six years. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1894 Southard was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Byron F. Ritchie on March 4, 1895 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1899 to 1907 he was chairman of the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures . In 1906 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, James Southard practiced again as a lawyer in Toledo, where he died on February 20, 1919.
