Edward Ball (politician)

Edward Ball (born November 6, 1811 in Fairfax County , Virginia , †  November 22, 1872 in Zanesville , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1857 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Ball attended elementary school in his home country. He later moved to Zanesville, Ohio, where he worked in agriculture. Between 1837 and 1843 he was in the Muskingum County police force. Until 1838 he was deputy and then full-time sheriff in this district. From 1845 to 1849 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; in 1849 he published the Zanesville Courier newspaper. Politically, he was initially a member of the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1852 Ball was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th  electoral district of Ohio , where he succeeded the independent Democrat John Johnson on March 4, 1853 . After being re-elected as a candidate for the opposition party , he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1857 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . From 1855 Ball was chairman of the public real estate committee. In 1856 he renounced another candidacy.

After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1860, Ball began working in this profession in Zanesville. Politically, he had meanwhile joined the Republican Party . In May 1860, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1861 to 1863, he succeeded Henry William Hoffman in the ceremonial role of Sergeant at Arms in the US House of Representatives. He then continued his legal practice. From 1868 to 1870 he was again a member of Parliament in Ohio. Edward Ball died on November 22, 1872 when he was hit by a train near Zanesville and fatally injured.
