J. Eugene Harding

John Eugene Harding (born June 27, 1877 in Excello , Ohio , †  July 26, 1959 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1909 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Eugene Harding was born in Excello, which is now part of the city of Middletown. He attended public schools in Amanda and then graduated from the Pennsylvania Military Academy in Chester . He then studied until 1900 at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . In the following years he worked in various industrial companies in Middletown. This included the family-owned company that manufactured paper. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1902 he was a member of the Ohio Senate .

In the 1906 congressional elections , Harding was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Robert M. Nevin on March 4, 1907 . Since he was not re-elected as an independent candidate in 1908, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1909 .

In 1910, Harding was a delegate to the regional Republican Convention in Ohio. In the following years he was employed in the paper industry in Chicago . He later moved to New York , where he worked for Pure Oil Co. between 1921 and 1926 . After that, he also worked in various other industries. In 1949 he retired. Eugene Harding died in New Haven on July 26, 1959 and was buried in Middletown.
