John Thomson (politician)

John Thomson (born November 20, 1780 in Ireland , † December 2, 1852 in Lisbon , Ohio ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1825 to 1837 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 6th, 12th and 17th  congressional districts of the State of Ohio.

biography

John Thomson was born in Ireland. In 1787 he moved to the United States with his parents. They settled in Ohio, where Thomson attended school and then studied medicine . He moved to Lisbon and practiced as a doctor there. He served on the State Senate from 1814, 1815, and 1817 to 1820, and in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1816 .

Thomson was first elected to Congress in 1824, representing the 6th Congressional District. In 1828 he was elected to the House of Representatives for the 12th district, and in 1832 for the newly created 17th district. In 1836 he was no longer a candidate and returned to Ohio to be active again in his profession. He died in Lisbon in 1852 and was buried in New Lisbon Cemetery .
