Charles Albert Vanik (born April 7, 1913 in Cleveland , Ohio , † August 30, 2007 in Jupiter , Florida ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1955 to 1981 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 21st and 22nd  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

Charles Vanik was born in Cleveland. There he attended school and then studied law at Case Western Reserve University . After serving on the Cleveland City Council in 1938 and 1939 and in the Ohio Senate from 1940 to 1942 , he enlisted in the US Navy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II . After returning from the war, he served as a judge for the City of Cleveland from 1946 to 1954.

In the 1954 congressional election , Vanik was elected to the US House of Representatives as a representative of the 21st District of Ohio. In 1968 he changed the district and represented the 22nd district until 1981. Vanik stood in the 1982 gubernatorial election as a candidate for vice governor. Together with the Attorney General of Ohio, William J. Brown , who ran for governor, they already lost the primary against the later governor Dick Celeste . Vanik then withdrew into private life.

Charles Vanik died in 2007 in his adopted home Jupiter, Florida, at the age of 94. He left behind his wife Betty, two children and two grandchildren.
