12-12-12: Concert for Sandy Victims (Original: 12-12-12: Concert for Sandy Relief) was a benefit concert that took place on December 12, 2012 at Madison Square Garden in New York .
The concert was held in response to Hurricane Sandy , which devastated parts of the northeastern United States , the Caribbean and the mid-Atlantic in late October 2012, causing an estimated $ 71 billion in damage. The concert was broadcast live on television, radio, cinema and the Internet on six continents. Proceeds from the event were raised by the Robin Hood Foundation for hurricane victims in New York , New Jersey and Connecticut states .
Many internationally known artists participated in the fundraiser, including The Who , Bruce Springsteen , Alicia Keys , Bon Jovi , Eric Clapton , Billy Joel , The Rolling Stones , Roger Waters , Chris Martin , Michael Stipe , Kanye West , Eddie Vedder , and, for the first time in 18 years, the band members of Nirvana ( Dave Grohl , Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear ) together with Paul McCartney .
background
In mid-November 2012, for the first time announced that the producer John Skye, president of Clear Channel Entertainment Enterprises , film producer Harvey Weinstein and James L. Dolan , chairman of Madison Square Garden Company and David Saltzman, organizer of the after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 completed Concert for New York City would also produce the 12-12-12: Concert for Sandy Victims . This ensured that many big names from the music industry reported quickly. The venue and day for ticket sales were announced in early December 2012.
Madison Square Garden was originally reserved for a game between the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens on December 12th, which was canceled due to the 2012 NHL lockout, among other things . With ticket sales and sponsorship money, more than 32 million US dollars were raised before the concert, which went to the Robin Hood Foundation to provide food, clothing and medication to those affected, especially in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. All telephone services were taken over by the well-known electronics group Samsung , so the company set up the call centers, equipped them with the devices and also ensured that many well-known celebrities sat on the phones and accepted the donation calls, among other things Whoopi Goldberg , Ben Stiller , Chelsea Clinton , Tony Danza and Jesse Jackson .
Sponsors
The main sponsors of the event included Chase Bank , General Electric , Samsung (provided the call center equipment, among others), State Farm Insurance , Visa , Verizon Foundation , Hyundai , AXS TV , Optimum Lightpath , Poland Spring and Delta Airlines .
Tickets
Tickets for the event were offered at noon on December 3, 2012 via TicketMaster . Chase Bank customers were able to purchase tickets from 9 a.m. The tickets were sold out within minutes. The face value of the tickets ranged from $ 150 to $ 2,500, and organizers promised that all proceeds would go to the Robin Hood Foundation. As with most concerts with high ticket demand, tickets were bought up and within a few minutes of the ticket sale at much higher prices on various websites, including StubHub! online, offered. On December 7, 2012, tickets for the first rows in front of the stage ranged from $ 48,000, while those in the upper tiers ranged from $ 525 to $ 3,000. The producers at the event urged people not to buy from these websites because the money was no longer going to charity. US Senator Charles E. Schumer wrote a letter to StubHub! and three other major online ticket exchanges, urged them not to let sellers get rich from the demand for tickets. A spokesperson for StubHub! , Glenn Lehrman, said the company does not have the technology to require the seller to donate their profits to charity. StubHub! passed his commissions of more than $ 500,000 to the charity. Jacqueline Peterson, a spokeswoman for TicketMaster , said her company had evidence that the speculators were using computer programs to get as many tickets as possible for resale. She said TicketMaster blocked thousands of sales identified using these programs. TicketMaster's own resellers TicketNow and TicketExchange were among the recipients of the Schumer letters ; Peterson said resale of 12-12-12 tickets was not allowed on these sites. TicketLiquidator , another resale website , said they refused to trade tickets for the concert. There have also been some cases of counterfeit tickets.
Charisma
The concert, which was broadcast live on more than 39 US TV channels including HBO , AMC , Showtime and AXS TV , as well as more than 20 international TV channels, more than 50 radio channels and the Internet around the world, was held for fundraising. The concert was also shown live in selected cinemas in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The concert was streamed on the internet through more than 25 websites including YouTube , SiriusXM , Hulu and Vevo . The concert was also shown on the big screen billboards in Times Square in New York City, London and Paris . According to media reports, donations raised at least another 20 million US dollars.
