qualification

Caribbean ( CFU zone)

Participant of the Gold Cup 2005

The teams from the Caribbean will qualify via the 2005 Caribbean Football Championship . The tournament, in which 24 Caribbean national teams took part in 2005, has since been called the "Digicel Caribbean Cup". It takes place in the spring before the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The two finalists and the winner of the game for third place qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

At the Caribbean Championship 2005 the mode was modified. First there was a group stage with six groups of four teams each. This was followed by two rounds in the knockout system, which the three national teams from Jamaica , Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago survived. Now a final round was held, in which, in addition to these three, the national team of Barbados also took part because the final round matches were taking place there. Jamaica won all three games by one goal and was the winner of the Caribbean Championship 2005. Cuba only lost to the tournament winner and came in second. Trinidad and Tobago beat Barbados 3-2 in their last game, finishing third. Barbados lost all games and ended up in fourth place without a point. Thus Jamaica, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago were confirmed as participants for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2005.

Central America ( UNCAF zone)

The UNCAF Nations Cup, which took place in Guatemala from February 19 to 27, 2005, served as the qualifying tournament for the Central American countries. The seven national teams played in two groups, of which group A consisted of four and group B three teams. The first two of the group should qualify for the knockout round. While Honduras and Guatemala prevailed in Group A , Costa Rica and Panama reached the semi-finals in Group B. Since the semi-final opponents were supposed to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2005, the representatives of Central America were determined. In the final, Costa Rica beat the team from Honduras 7: 6 on penalties.

North America

The two North American states USA and Canada and the defending champion from Mexico were automatically qualified.

Visiting teams

Teams from other associations are repeatedly invited to the North and Central American soccer championships. These are mostly members of the South American association CONMEBOL , such as Brazil, which at the 2003 tournament could only be defeated in the final of Mexico.

In 2005 the South American team from Colombia and the African national team from South Africa played on invitation . South Africa, which will host the 2010 World Cup , is the first African nation to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup .

The Group A games, all of which were held in Miami, Florida, were hit by Hurricane Dennis . The cyclone had already wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and was moving towards the coast of the United States. The organizers took no chances and postponed the Honduras - Colombia and Panama - Trinidad and Tobago games for one day from July 9th to 10th. The last two group matches were also postponed by one day.

Group winners in group A were the national team from Honduras with 7 points. In the first game against Trinidad and Tobago they played 1-1, with their goalkeeper Victor Coello injured after a strong shot in the 83rd minute and had to be replaced. However, he was used again in the second game against Colombia. This game was won 2-1 after a leadership of Colombia because of two goals by Wilmer Velásquez . Honduras were also the better team in their third game, which they won 1-0 against Panama.

Panama took second place in the group with 4 points. Panama surprised in the opening game, in which they defeated the favorites from Colombia 1-0 with a goal from Luis Tejada . The following game against Trinidad and Tobago was the highest-scoring game in this group. After an open exchange of blows, the teams drew 2-2. Again, Luis Tejada scored the Panamanian goals. With Panama losing 1-0 to Honduras in their last game, Tejada was Panama's only goalscorer in the preliminary round. The loss in the last game could have been much bigger, but Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo thwarted many good chances for Honduras.

The team from Colombia disappointed during the preliminary round. Although she started without some of her regular staff, she was still not as convincing as other teams in the tournament with a similar problem did. In the first game she was the clear favorite and dominated the first half against Panama, but could not score. Against Honduras they took a 1-0 lead after a penalty goal by Tressor Moreno , but did not hold up against the players from Honduras, who then increased the pace and took over the game. In the last game she defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 and qualified as one of the two best thirds in the group for the quarter-finals.

Trinidad and Tobago were eliminated after the group stage but still showed a respectable performance. The team started without their star player Dwight Yorke , who had previously played for Manchester United , and even took a 1-0 lead in their first game against eventual group winners Honduras. Against surprisingly strong Panamanians, Cornell Glen equalized 2-2 in stoppage time . Marvin Andrews , who played in the Scottish League for Glasgow Rangers , had previously met . After losing to Colombia in the third game, they finished last in the table with 2 points.

As expected, the USA national team became group winners in Group B with 7 points. Although they fell behind against weak Cubans in their first game, they were able to win the game after immense offensive work and goals by Landon Donovan (2), DaMarcus Beasley and Clint Dempsey with 4 : Win 1. In the second game against Canada, coach Bruce Arena put an almost completely different team on the field. Both teams played equally badly in the first half, but the Americans dominated the game in the second half and won 2-0. After two wins, the US Boys were already in the quarter-finals and played 0-0 in the last game against about equally strong Costa Ricans.

Costa Rica finished second in the group, level on points with the Americans. In the first game, the Central Americans beat Canada 1-0 after a hand penalty from Jafet Soto . Then they defeated Cuba 3-1. They had taken the lead in the 60th minute through a goal from Randall Brenes , but Michael Galindo equalized in the 72nd minute after a single action. In the following urge phase, the Costa Ricans were awarded two penalties. One was converted by Jafet Soto in the 79th minute and the other by Randall Brenes four minutes later, but his penalty had to be repeated because his teammates had walked into the box too early. In the last game against the USA there was a draw.

Canada finished third in the group, but could not qualify for the quarter-finals. The first game they lost 0-1 against Costa Rica after Patrice Bernier had played the ball with his hand in the penalty area and Costa Rica was awarded a penalty. Captain Kevin McKenna also saw the red card in this game. The Canadians were also unlucky in their second game, which the USA won 2-0. Canada's defender Josh Simpson also gave the Americans the opening goal with an own goal. After two defeats Canada still had a small chance to qualify as third party if they won high against Cuba. The 2-1 win was not enough, however, because with 2: 4 goals they had a worse goal difference than the Colombians from Group A, whose goal difference was even.

Cuba was a blatant outsider, as the young Cuban team consisted only of players from the domestic league and therefore had little international experience. In the 1: 4 defeat against the United States, the Cubans remained lackluster, although they managed the opening goal through Lester More . They also remained without a win against Costa Rica. After two defeats, the Cubans still had the chance to qualify, but this was extremely low due to the goal difference of 2: 7. With the 1: 2 defeat against Canada, Cuba was finally bottom of the group with 0 points and was eliminated from the tournament.

Mexico had performed well in the FIFA Confederations Cup held a month earlier and were the big favorites in Group C after four Gold Cup victories. Although they dominated South Africa, they fell behind with two counter goals. The connection hit came shortly before the end of the game, so that you surprisingly lost the first game. In the second game against Guatemala, Mexico dominated again and won a clear 4-0 victory. The last game against the previous group winners Jamaica ended with a 1-0 Mexican victory after Héctor Altamirano had scored the decisive goal in the 5th minute. With two wins and one defeat, Mexico finished first in the group after a bad start.

The guests from South Africa competed with a young team that did well. Against tournament favorites Mexico they played successfully on the counterattack, which they won 2-1. In the second game against Jamaica, the opponent dominated and South Africa limited itself to the counter game. The teams offered each other an entertaining exchange of blows and finally drew 3: 3. Against the weakest team in the group, Guatemala, there were two hits just before the break, one for each team. South Africa managed the draw and moved into the next round as second in the group with 5 points.

Jamaica was unexpectedly offensive. The game against Guatemala started rapidly. After 15 minutes it was already 2-1 for Jamaica, who only played ten after a red card for Claude Davis . Despite being outnumbered, they continued to storm the Guatemalan gate. Finally Jamaica won 4-3. They dominated the game against South Africa, but had to run behind three times. The game ended 3: 3. The strong Mexicans could not be beaten.

The team from Guatemala was considered the weakest team from the start. In the game against Jamaica they were playfully inferior, but in the last half hour they gained a field superiority. Striker Carlos Ruiz scored all three goals in the 3-4 defeat. Against Mexico they were nothing more than a build-up opponent. Without a chance from the start, they lost 4-0. In addition, captain Guillermo Raminez saw the red card after a discussion with the referee. Before the last game against South Africa, Guatemala had only one theoretical chance to advance. After it was 1-1 at half-time, Guatemala increased the pace in the second half, but could not overcome the South African defense. South Africa only managed the draw necessary to advance. Guatemala were eliminated as bottom of the group with 1 point and 4: 9 goals.
