Federata Shqiptare e Futbollit , or FSHF for short , is the Albanian Football Association .

The association, headquartered in the provincial capital Tirana, organizes the Superiore category , the national cup competition Kupa e Shqipërisë and the SuperKupa , the game of the winners of the two aforementioned competitions. Next the cup and which are from the Football Federation Women's Championship , various championships for children and Futsal -Competitions aligned. The national soccer team's games are also organized.

history

The association was founded on June 6, 1930. In the same year, the Kampionati Shqiptar started with six teams: Skënderbeu Korça , Teuta Durrës , Urani Elbasan , SK Vlorë , SK Tirana and Bashkimi Shkodër . The association joined FIFA in 1932 .

When Albania replaced Greece in the Balkan Cup , the first international match came on October 7, 1946 in Tirana . They lost 3-2 to Yugoslavia . Nevertheless, the title was won - so far the only international title in the national selection.

In 1954 the FSHF was one of the founding members of UEFA . The first participation in a major tournament was the qualification for the European Championship in 1964 , in which Albania failed after a first-round bye in the 2nd round after a 1-0 win in the first leg with a 0-4 defeat in the second leg to Denmark .

From March to April 2008, the Albanian Football Association's membership of FIFA and UEFA was suspended because the government interfered in the association's affairs.

The women's national football team had their first game on May 5, 2011, a friendly game against Macedonia , which was won 1-0.

successes

National team

The greatest success so far has been participation in the EURO 2016 in France, the first qualification for a major tournament. In August 2015, Albania achieved its best-ever position in the official FIFA world rankings with 22nd place , thanks to a 1-0 win in a friendly against France and the rating of the abandoned game against Serbia .

Furthermore, the national selection was able to draw attention to itself several times through individual games. In December 1967, in qualifying for the 1968 European Championship, the 0-0 draw against the German national football team, known in Germany as the shame of Tirana, prevented them from participating in the final round. In qualifying for the 1986 World Cup , there were even two surprising results: the big favorites from Belgium were beaten 2-0, and Poland drew 2-2. Albania won against the newly crowned European champions Greece in 2004 at home.

The U-21 national team qualified for the European Championship in 1984 , the U-16 national team also qualified for the European Championship in 1994 .

Club soccer

Major international successes of club teams have so far failed to materialize. In the 1980s, several clubs reached the round of 16 of the European Cup . KF Tirana , also record champions with 24 national championships (as of 2016), failed, for example, in the European Cup of National Champions in 1988/89 to IFK Göteborg in that round . KS Flamurtari Vlora also played in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup against FC Barcelona . In 2015, KF Skënderbeu Korça qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League , which can be considered the greatest success in Albanian club football.

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, numerous players have moved abroad and some have enjoyed success there. Record national player Lorik Cana was French cup winner with Paris Saint-Germain and Italian cup winner with Lazio Rome , for example Foto Strakosha was Greek champion with Olympiacos Piraeus . In Germany especially players like Altin Rraklli , Igli Tare or Altin Lala have become known.
