Alexander Rudolf Hohlfeld (born December 29, 1865 in Dresden ; † 1956 ) was a German specialist in German .

Life

The son of Karl Gottlieb Hohlfeld and Helene (née Libbert) Hohlfeld was born in Dresden and attended the Annenschule (Dresden) . He then studied modern languages ​​from 1884 to 1888 and received his doctorate in 1888 at the University of Leipzig . He studied in Paris in 1889 and was a lecturer in French at Vanderbilt University from 1889 to 1890 . In 1890 he married Helen Voss from Elgin, Illinois . Hohlfeld was associate professor for Romance languages ​​in Vanderbilt from 1890 to 1892, then from 1892 to 1901 professor of Germanic languages ​​and was dean of this department in Vanderbilt from 1900 to 1901. In 1904 Hohlfeld was appointed chairman of the German facultyUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison , which he held until his retirement in 1936. Helmut Rehder, who did his doctorate at Heidelberg University, was his successor as head of department.
