About this picture
Au from the beggar path

Au is a municipality a few kilometers south of Freiburg im Breisgau in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg . The place belongs to the administrative community Hexental with headquarters in neighboring Merzhausen .

geography

Au is located in the northern Hexental between the Schönberg in the west and the Black Forest in the east.

Community structure

The municipality of Au includes the village of Au, the Zinken Schönberg, Hof und Häuser Hägenhof and the courtyards Burghöfe, Finsterbach, Hasgelhöfe, Heimbachhof, Kaischenhof, Kopfackerhof and Schwabenhöfe. The abandoned village of Witraha and the abandoned castles Obhusen and Au are located in the municipality . The mention of the place Niderhusun in the year 861 probably refers to Niederhausen in the municipality of Rheinhausen in the district of Emmendingen .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are Horben in the south-east, Wittnau (Breisgau) in the south-west, Ehaben in the west and Merzhausen in the north (all districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald ) and the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in the east.

geology

The main fault of the Upper Rhine Graben runs through Au . The side facing Schönberg is characterized by the remains of large landslides.

history

Au is mentioned for the first time in a document from the St. Gallen monastery in 866. From 1444 to 1581 the Schnewlin Bernlapp held the place as a fief of the Austrians, in 1696 the village was sold to the barons of Baden . During the Thirty Years' War , Au was the scene of the second day of the Battle of Freiburg on August 5, 1644 .

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Since almost half of the municipal area is agricultural land, this branch of industry still plays a significant role. This also includes viticulture, which is already mentioned in 868 in a document in connection with Au. Viticulture is carried out, among other things, by the Wissler winery with its Auer Altberg site, which was first mentioned in 1789.

In addition to its role as an agricultural community, Au is also increasingly becoming a residential community for employees who commute to nearby Freiburg or its surroundings.

traffic

The L 122 (Dorfstrasse) runs through Au from Freiburg to Ehrenkirchen . The bus route 7208 Freiburg - Bad Krozingen operated by Südbadenbus GmbH also runs there . Individual journeys on line 12 of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG between the Vauban district and Merzhausen will be extended to the southern edge of Au, mainly on the edge of the day.

Personalities

Sons and daughters

Hartmann von Aue (* around 1160, † after 1220) may have named himself after Au. Whether it actually comes from a ministerial family documented here has not been proven - other places of origin discussed are also Obernau , now part of Rottenburg , and Au near Ravensburg (Weißenau monastery). Hartmann was one of the great epics of the Staufer period .
