Bärenfels Castle

Castle Baerenfels even Berenfels , Berenvels or Steinegg called, is the ruins of a hilltop castle at the beginning of Wehratals on the 702.5  m above sea level. NHN Hohen Steinegg above the town of Wehr in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

Presumably, construction of the castle, a typical high medieval clearing castle , began in the 12th century . The castle, formerly probably the seat of the Knights of Bärenfels , at that time owned by Messrs. Schönau and still called Steinegg after the mountain of the same name, came into the possession of the Lords of Aesch, a family of the Counts of Thierstein , in the 13th century Century in the fief of the Basel bishop .

On October 18, 1356, the castle was destroyed by the great Basel earthquake and then in the late 14th century it came into the possession of the Lords of Bärenfels, a Basel knight family whose ancestral castle was in the Birstal near Basel . From then on, the castle was named after its new owners and lost its importance. The castle was abandoned in the 15th century and was further destroyed by troops passing by during the Thirty Years' War .

description

The 16 meter high keep with its high entrance 9 meters high and 6.4 meters in diameter as well as the remains of a 3.6 meter thick shield wall have been preserved from the former castle complex.
