history

The history of the Biederitz choir

The history of the Biederitz choir goes back to 1812. The pastor and school inspector Carl Leberecht Messow founded a so-called singing choir in Biederitz in 1812. It is unknown how long this choir existed in its legal form at the time and which successor choirs were formed. One can assume that there was always singing in Biederitz, both in church and in other social formations.

The Biederitzer Kantorei was founded in 1989 by Cantor Michael Scholl , who has also been the choirmaster since then. Above all, the spirit of optimism and the euphoria of the political change gave rise to the idea of establishing a choir in Biederitz , which is dedicated to sophisticated choral music and thus enriches cultural life in the Magdeburg region . The first concert took place on the 1st of Advent 1989. A year later, a larger choral work was performed in Biederitz for the first time with Franz Schubert's Mass in G major .

The choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei

The choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei has about 50 members. It is an important concern of the choir to bring previously seldom or never performed works to a wide audience, with a special focus on the work of Georg Philipp Telemann . In addition to choral symphonic works from the Baroque , Classical and Romantic periods, for example by Johann Sebastian Bach , Georg Friedrich Händel , Johann Friedrich Fasch , Franz Schubert , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven and César Franck , he also devotes himself to the performance of modern works including Leonard Bernsteins and Colin Mawbys . The choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei pursues an intensive concert activity in the Jerichower Land and in the vicinity of Magdeburg. It enjoys a very good reputation regionally and nationally, as evidenced by the press coverage and radio reports.

The chamber choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei

The chamber choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei was founded in 1991 by Michael Scholl and has around 20 members. The main focus of his work is Georg Philipp Telemann's opus. In cooperation with the Magdeburg Center for Telemann Care and Research , cantatas , passions and oratorios , some of which have not been performed since Telemann's lifetime, will be performed again. Radio recordings and CD recordings reflect the choir's commitment to the often forgotten work of the Magdeburg composer. The chamber choir traditionally performs a passion from Telemann's rich oeuvre every year in Magdeburg , Telemann's birthplace. Furthermore, the chamber choir dedicates itself to the performance of modern choral literature, among others by Benjamin Britten , Arvo Pärt , Morten Lauridsen , Petr Eben and Colin Mawby .

The children's choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei

The children's choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei has around 10 children. It was brought into being by Michael Scholl and is an important part of the youth work of the Biederitzer Kantorei. The children's choir has appeared since 2005 mainly with the performance of children's musicals for the Biederitzer Ehlefest and Advent, often in cooperation with the children's choir of the Sankt-Mechthild-Schule Magdeburg .

Musical direction

The choirs of the Biederitzer Kantorei give at least 25 concerts a year.

Baroque music

The Biederitzer Kantorei and the Weimar Baroque Ensemble at the performance of Handel's MESSIAH (Pauluskirche Magdeburg, 2009)

The focus here is the extremely rich work of Georg Philipp Telemann. Recordings for the radio and CD productions were made from first performances in our time, including church music works by Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Friedrich Fasch . Since 1999, several CDs have been released by Bayer Records Amati , most of which contain world premiere recordings of works by Georg Philipp Telemann. The CDs are sold worldwide and are available from specialist dealers.

Modern compositions

Colin Mawby

Thanks to the collaboration with the contemporary English composer Sir Colin Mawby , both the choir and the chamber choir of the Biederitzer Kantorei have made public appearances through highly acclaimed premieres of modern works. The Biederitzer Kantorei is now friends with Colin Mawby. On the occasion of the German premiere of Christ vincit and A Fun Gloria , he made his first guest appearance at the Biederitzer Kantorei in 2007. In 2009, further Mawby compositions ( Te Deum and A Song of Hope ) were premiered in Germany in Magdeburg , also in the presence of the composer. In 2010 the premiere of a Missa solemnis took place in Magdeburg , which Colin Mawby dedicated to the Biederitzer Kantorei and its director Michael Scholl.

Other composers

Since 2002 there has been a friendly relationship with the Italian composer and choir director Maurizio Sebastianelli from Palestrina . For the German premiere of his works in 2008 he made guest appearances in Biederitz and Magdeburg.

For the 20th anniversary of the Biederitzer Kantorei in 2009, the Berlin musician Benedict Goebel composed a piece that the Kantorei premiered in 2010.
