Giorgio Chiellini (born August 14, 1984 in Pisa ) is an Italian football player who has been under contract with Juventus Turin since 2004 . After playing as a left- back at the beginning of his career , he retrained early to become a center- back. Since 2018 he has been the captain of Juventus Turin and the Italian national team .
Career
In the club
Chiellini began his footballing career at AS Livorno in the Italian Serie C1 and increased with the team in the 2003-04 season in the Serie A on. In the summer of 2004 he was signed by the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . Juventus loaned him to the league rivals Fiorentina , for whom he made his debut in Italy's top division on September 12, 2004 and completed 37 of 38 season games.
For the 2005/06 season Chiellini returned from Fiorentina to Juventus and fought for a regular place after a difficult start to the season under coach Fabio Capello . After Juve's forced relegation to Serie B for the 2006/07 season due to the manipulation scandal , Chiellini had a regular place in the defense under the new coach Didier Deschamps and managed to get promoted again with the team.
In the 2007/08 season Chiellini moved from the left full-back position to central defense for the injured Jorge Andrade . There he became a key player in the team that finished third in Serie A under Claudio Ranieri . After his performance at the European Championship in 2008, his contract with Juventus was extended until 2013.
In the 2015/16 season , Chiellini played his 400th game for Juventus against Sampdoria Genoa and won the Scudetto with the old lady for the fifth time in a row .
His contract in Turin runs until 2021.
In the national team
Giorgio Chiellini went through all youth national teams from the U-15 and completed 67 junior internationals. His greatest success during this time was at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens when he won the bronze medal under coach Claudio Gentile . For a long time Chiellini was the captain of the Italian U-21 national team , with which he also took part in the U-21 European Championship in the Netherlands .
On November 17, 2004 he made his debut under Marcello Lippi in a 1-0 win against Finland in the senior national team . On November 21, 2007 he scored his first international goal in a 3-1 home win against the Faroe Islands .
Due to his performance at Juventus, Chiellini was appointed by national coach Roberto Donadoni in the squad for the European Championship 2008 in Austria and Switzerland . On June 2, 2008, while preparing for the European Championship, he fouled his national team colleague Fabio Cannavaro in such a way that he suffered a double torn ligament on his left ankle and had to cancel his participation in the tournament due to injury. Chiellini played three games at the tournament and showed strong performances , especially in the quarter-finals against Spain , who lost 4-2 on penalties .
At the 2012 European Championship , Chiellini was used in five games. Only in the quarter-final game against England was he absent due to an injury due to a torn muscle . He took part as a regular player in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , which ended in the preliminary round for Italy. In the decisive final game, Uruguayan Luis Suárez bit him on the shoulder.
On October 10, 2014, he marked all goals in the European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan : the 1-0, the 1-1 through an own goal and the 2-1.
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Italian squad . He played four of the five tournament games as a regular from the starting line-up, only in the insignificant third round game, when the team was already the group winner, he was spared. In the last sixteen he initiated the victory over Spain with the goal to make it 1-0. In the quarter-finals he was substituted just before the penalty shoot-out, which was won by opponents Germany and ended the tournament for Italy.

Private life
Chiellini is a graduate of the University of Turin, the title of his thesis in business administration is The balance sheets of football clubs using the example of Juventus Turin . In 2017, Chiellini received a master's degree in business administration. In his master's thesis he wrote again about his employer under the title The Business Model of Juventus Football Club in an International Context .
Chiellini married his long-time girlfriend Carolina Bonistalli in July 2014 in Livorno.
