Costa Rica is a small town in the east of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul , 40 km from the entrance to the Emas National Park in Goiás .
The place is at an altitude of 641 m. It was founded on May 12, 1980 as a separate municipality . Originally it was the seat of a country estate, the Fazenda Imbirussu . The area is enormous with 5,741 km². The population is 16,318 (2005 estimate) and the human development index is 0.798. The mayor (2009–2012) is Jesus Queiroz Baird ( PMDB ).
The municipality borders in the north on Mato Grosso , in the east on Chapadão do Céu in Goiás, in the southeast on Chapadão do Sul , in the south on Água Clara , in the southwest on Camapuã and in the northwest on Alcinópolis .
