history
Porto Murtinho was founded because of the maté tea . The drink is consumed in large quantities in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. The proceeds from the sale of the tea have a significant share in the financing of the Paraguayan warfare in the Triple Alliance War of 1864–1870. After the defeat of Paraguay, the Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro II granted the trader Thomaz Larangeira a concession to produce the tea for his support, which led to the establishment of the company Companhia Matte Larangeira . On December 9, 1880, the imperial decree no. 8799 Larangeira authorized the cultivation of yerba mate, initially for 10 years. Larangeira brought maté farmers from Paraguay to the southern Pantanal, who planted maté plantations in the area that once belonged to the Guarini Indians. With the help of influential politicians such as Joaquim Murtinho , José Manuel Murtinho and General Antonio Maria Coelho , the society succeeded in obtaining a further extension of the monopoly through Decree No. 520 of June 23, 1890. The transport of the maté made a port on the Rio Paraguay necessary. Therefore, in July 1892, the company acquired the Três Barras Fazenda from Marshal Boaventura da Mota, which was on the left bank of the Paraguay River, and built a port for the export of Maté. By decree 310 of April 2, 1912, part of the municipality of Corumbá and together with the port was merged on June 13, 1912 to form the city of Porto Murinho. The city was named after the Brazilian Minister of Finance and President of the Rio Branco e Matto Grosso Bank , Joaquim Murthino . This bank had raised the funds to set up the company. As a result, the company also took care of the construction of railway lines to transport the tea. Gradually, production and administration were moved further south, to the state of Paraná . For a short time, Porto Murtinho also played a role in Brazil's constitutional revolution of 1932. The states of São Paulo and southern Mato Grosso (now Mato Grosso do Sul) fought against the dictatorship of Brazilian President Getúlio Vargas . At that time, the city was an important line of defense against the Brazilian army. At that time the Brazilian Navy stationed in Ladário succeeded in destroying the rebel supply ships on the Rio Paraguay. The rebel forces were soon wiped out by the disruption of their supply line.
