history

The area has been recorded on maps as Aquidauana since the 17th century. The first settlers were soldiers who settled there between the Rio Aquidauana and the Rio Negro during the Triple Alliance War . Aquidauana was founded on August 15, 1892 by a committee of local farmers who needed a river port to ship their cattle. The first school was built in 1894. Aquidauana received city rights on December 18, 1906. In 1910, it also became a comarca .

In the period between 1914 and 1917, the city was economically the most important city in southern Mato Grosso . In 1928, Aqidauana was the first community in Mato Grosso to be electrified and had the first widescreen cinema. In the following years the most important industrial companies were relocated to Três Lagoas and the city lost more and more of its importance. Today the main line of business is extensive cattle breeding on the pastures of the Pantanal. In 1977 the city was incorporated into the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, previously it belonged to the state of Mato Grosso.

City administration

The executive rests with the city prefect. After the local elections in 2012 for the 2013 to 2016 term of office, Fauzi Suleiman was first elected by the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), but by decision of the electoral court in 2013 he was replaced by the interim mayor Zé Henrique Trindade of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT).

The legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council. The place is also the seat of the district of the same name. Other districts from 1968 onwards are Camisão, Cipotânea, Piraputanga and Taunay.

With communities Anastácio , Dois Irmãos do Buriti and Miranda it forms the micro-region Aquidauana , which in turn forms the micro-region of Baixo Pantanal the mesoregion Pantanais Sul Mato Gros Senses , one of the four mesoregions in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Attractions

The city is called "Cidade Natureza" (City of Nature) because there is a rich fauna in the vicinity with Jabiru giant storks, hyacinth macaws and herons . Tourist attractions include rivers rich in fish, indigenous villages and historical buildings.

  • Cathedral (Praça Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição). The church was built in 1930 in neo-Gothic style. Its appearance is inspired by the Notre-Dame cathedral . The cathedral's stained glass windows are particularly worth seeing.
  • Friendship Bridge: known as the "Old Bridge". The bridge first connected the city with Anastácio on the other side of the Rio Aquidauana in 1926 . It looks like a railway bridge and is still in use today, although it only has one track.

traffic

Aquidauana is an important station on the Trem do Pantanal (Pantanal train) of the Serra Verde Express railway company , which connects the city with the capital Campo Grande . Today the train is mainly used for tourism and only runs on weekends.
