Iguatemi , officially Município de Iguatemi , is a city in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul in the south-west mesoregion in the Iguatemi microregion .

history

origin of the name

Originally the municipality was called Vila Sacarón. The current name is derived from the Rio Iguatemi river that flows through the city. "Iguatemi" is a Tupi term that means "river of the haughty canoe".

geography

location

The city is located 461 km from the capital of the state ( Campo Grande ) and 1415 km from the state capital ( Brasília ). The city is bordered by Juti and Naviraí to the north, Itaquiraí and Eldorado to the east, Amambai and Tacuru to the west, and Japorã to the south .

climate

The climate is temperate but warm. Iguatemi has high rainfall all year round (the annual total is 1584 mm on average). Even the driest month is still relatively humid. The annual average temperature is 21.8 ° C. The warmest month is January. Average temperatures of 25.5 ° C are then reached. June has the lowest temperature of the year with an average of 17.2 ° C.

Waters

The city is under the influence of the Río Paraguay and the Rio Paraná , which belong to the river system of the Río de la Plata . Rivers that run through the urban area: Rio Iguatemi , Rio Jogui (tributary of the Rio Iguatemi), Rio Maracai and Rio Amambai (right tributary of the Rio Paraná, 340 km long, 90 km of which are navigable).
