← German championship 1937/38
The 32nd German championship season in 1938/39 was the last soccer championship of National Socialist Germany before the Second World War .
However, the expansion phase of the “millennial empire” had already started. Austria was annexed in March 1938 and on September 29, 1938 the Sudetenland , which was separated from Czechoslovakia , was also annexed according to the Munich Agreement . Both areas were each set up as a new football district (Austria under the name "Ostmark"), so that there were now 18 Gauligen and thus 18 finalists. Propagandistically, one spoke in Germany of the first "Greater German Championship". The competition mode had to be slightly modified due to the changed number of participants: The preliminary round was now played in three groups with four teams and one group with six teams, with the group of six teams initially playing in two subgroups of three teams and then their winners in the group finals Group winners played.
The newly added teams from Austria (and that meant: from Vienna ) were extremely strong. So who had SK Rapid Wien already the 1938 tschammerpokal won and with the SK Admira Vienna an Austrian team also reached the final straightaway for the German championship. There, however, the Viennese experienced a fiasco. They were defeated by their opponent FC Schalke 04 with 0: 9. It was the highest defeat in the final of all time and the 4th German championship title for the Gelsenkirchen team .
Organizationally, something changed in German football again this year. On December 21, 1938, the German Reich Association for Physical Exercise was incorporated into the NSDAP and henceforth called itself the "National Socialist Reich Association for Physical Exercise" (NSRL). This removed any independence of the sports clubs. All possessions were transferred to the NSDAP. However, the incorporation of the DRL was sought in order to be able to counteract the increasing pressure from competing organizations such as Hitler Youth , Kraft durch Freude and SS .
