EHF Cup 2016/17

At the EHF Cup 2016/17 took Handball -Vereinsmannschaften from Europe part, who had qualified in the previous season in their home countries for the competition. The cup games began on September 2, 2016. The semi-finals and the final took place as part of a Final Four on May 20 and 21, 2017 in Göppingen .

qualification

The qualification phase consisted of three rounds. These were played in home and away matches. In the draw for each round, the teams were assigned two pots. A team from Pot 1 was drawn to a team from Pot 2. The winners of each pairing (marked in bold) qualified for the following round.

In each round, the teams played the first game at home. In some cases, the teams agreed to play both games in the same location.

Round 1

The first qualifying round was drawn on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. A total of 30 teams took part in the draw. The allocation of the lottery pots was as follows:

round 2

The second qualifying round was drawn after the first qualifying round on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. A total of 32 teams took part in the draw. The allocation of the lottery pots was as follows:

Round 3

The third qualifying round was drawn on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. A total of 32 teams took part in the draw. The allocation of the lottery pots was as follows:

Group stage

The 16 winners from the third qualifying round are qualified for the group stage. The draw took place on Thursday, December 1st, 2016.

The 16 teams were divided into four pots and drawn into four groups of four teams. The country protection rule has taken effect. Two clubs from the same country could not be drawn into the same group.

In each group, the teams play against each other in home and away games on match days. The game days are 11/12. February, 18./19. February 4th / 5th March, 11./12. March, 25./26. March and 1st / 2nd April 2017.

If two or more teams are tied at the end of the group matches, the following criteria are used to determine the final table (in descending order):

1. Number of points in games for all teams involved;

2. Goal difference in the games of all teams involved;

3. Higher number of goals scored in games by all teams involved;

4. Goal difference in all games of the group;

5. Higher number of goals scored in all group games;

6. drawing of lots

Quarter finals

In principle, the first two in each group qualify for the quarter-finals. As the organizer of the Final Four, Göppingen was already directly qualified for the Final Four with the athletic qualification for the quarter-finals. Thus, the worst runners-up in the group was eliminated, and only three quarter-finals were played.

The draw for the quarter-finals took place on April 4, 2017. The first legs were on 22./23. April 2017, the second leg played on April 29, 2017.
