Hochdahl is a former train station and today's stop in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Erkrath. The stop is integrated into the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network and, in addition to the Erkrath , Erkrath Nord and Hochdahl-Millrath stops , is one of four stops in Erkrath.

Location and structure

The stop is an operating point on the VzG route 2525 ( Neuss Hbf  - Düsseldorf Hbf  - Wuppertal Hbf  - Schwelm  - Abzw Linderhausen). The double-track line is only used by the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn trains. The VzG route 2550 ( Aachen Hbf  - Kassel Hbf ) for long-distance and regional traffic runs parallel to the route . The line is single-track in the Hochdahl area. Immediately to the west of the stop are the alternate connection point Hochdahl (Awanst) on the S-Bahn line and the junction Hochdahl (Abzw), via which the two main lines are connected.

The operating point forms the eastern, mountain-side end of the Erkrath - Hochdahl steep ramp , which, with a gradient of 33.3 per thousand, was one of the steepest main railway lines in Europe. Up until 1926, trains were pulled by a locomotive traveling downhill by means of a chain and various pulleys when traveling uphill . The track were then in 1964 planned to complete electrification sliding locomotives used. On the forecourt, the pulley, preserved as a monument, reminds of the company.

The former train station and today's breakpoint is located in the northern area of the center of Hochdahl and is particularly important for commuters to the Düsseldorf and Wuppertal areas . The Hochdahler Markt is about one and a half kilometers south of the stop. The stop has a central platform that can be reached from a pedestrian underpass under the tracks via stairs and an elevator.

A special feature of the Hochdahl stop was the level crossing with full barriers directly at the stop. After the construction of an underpass a few meters further ( L 403a ), the level crossing was initially closed to motor vehicle traffic, but pedestrians could continue to use it. After the access stairs at the south exit of the pedestrian underpass had been supplemented by a wheelchair-accessible ramp, the level crossing was closed and dismantled in May 2015.

The sections around Hochdahl have been controlled and monitored from the Gf signal box in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim since 1985 . The relay interlocking of the type SpDrS600 replaced the two mechanical interlockings Ho and Hf. The latter has been preserved as a monument and is now used as a residential building.

history

The stop was opened on April 10, 1841 on the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld line. The operator was the Düsseldorf-Elberfelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which a few years later became part of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

The establishment of the station was required solely by the necessity of a stop after overcoming the steep section. Until the middle of the 19th century and before the ironworks were built, only about 60 people lived in the village. The construction of a locomotive shed on the south side of the line was also connected with the construction of the station . The plant was most recently Lokstation the depot Wuppertal-Vohwinkel affiliated.

When the east-west S-Bahn was built between Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof and Hagen Hauptbahnhof in the 1980s, a third track was added to the double-track line since 1963. The old platforms were replaced by a central platform. The removal of the Hildener Straße level crossing at the western end of the platform was planned at the time of construction. After the closure, the central platform should be moved further west. During the construction work for the third track, the pulley of the rope hoist operation including the wheel arches were rediscovered and exhibited.

The stop was modernized in 2017. The platform was rebuilt, provided with guide strips for the blind and access through the pedestrian underpass was made barrier-free with an elevator. The platform was also lowered from its original height of 96 cm to 76 cm above the upper edge of the rail to enable barrier-free entry and exit of the vehicles that have been on the S 8 since the end of 2014.

service

The S-Bahn station is served by the lines S8 and S68 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr . There is a bus stop to the north of the stop that is served by two bus lines (741, O5). A park-and-ride car park is located between the northern bus stop and the stop's platform. The bus routes are operated by the Rheinbahn .

museum

In 1991 the EHEH (Eisenbahn- und Heimatmuseum Erkrath-Hochdahl eV) was founded, an association for the renovation of the locomotive shed located at the former station , which in 1997 was able to complete the Locomotive Shed Museum . Various railway historical exhibits can be seen there. There is also a maintenance hall in which old vehicles are restored, which is open to the public twice a week in the summer months. The museum exhibition itself is also open in the summer months, once a month, on a Sunday. In addition to the museum, the Lokschuppen also hosts cultural events such as the annual Erkrath Jazz Summer .
