Deadpool 2 by director David Leitch is the sequel to Deadpool . The American action film with satirical elements was released in German cinemas on May 17, 2018. The title character is embodied as in the predecessor by Ryan Reynolds and is based on the comic book character of the same name from Marvel Comics . It is the 11th film in the X-Men franchise .

Two years after the events of the first film, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool has become a hit man who works worldwide and kills various criminals. After an aborted attack on the leader of a drug cartel in his hometown, he returns home to his girlfriend Vanessa Carlysle to celebrate their anniversary together. Deadpool give Vanessa a Skee-Ball - token , in terms of their first date, and the two agree on starting a family. Later that night, the drug lord attacks Wade at home and shoots Vanessa there. Wade chases the boss and kills him.

Six weeks later, Deadpool decides to kill himself by blowing up his apartment with several barrels of fuel. During his "death" he has a vision of Vanessa in the hereafter: She says that his heart is not yet in the right place. Wade remains confused. Colossus comes to the now destroyed apartment and brings the dismembered Wade to the X-Men base to recruit him for the X-Men and to help him overcome his grief. Deadpool joins the X-Men and a little later, along with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, is called to a case in which a young mutant named Russell Collins, who calls himself a Firefist, rioted in front of his orphanage. After several failed attempts to calm Russell down, Wade learns that the house manager and Russell's supervisor physically abused him, whereupon he shot a supervisor. This leads to both Deadpool and Russell's arrest. They are led away with collars that suppress their mutant powers. As a result, Wade's self-healing powers can no longer hold back the cancer cells in his body.

Wade and Russell are taken to the ice box , an isolated prison for mutants whose powers are also suppressed with collars. While in custody, Cable, a time-traveling cyborg soldier, breaks into the prison. Deadpool initially believes that he is after him, but soon realizes that he wants to kill young Russell. In a fight with Cable, Deadpool manages to free himself and Cable from prison. Deadpool then has another vision of Vanessa, through which he realizes that he should save Russell, since he had once failed to do so with Vanessa.

Deadpool and Weasel organize a team of other mutants to fight Cable and save Russell, consisting of Domino, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Vanisher and Peter, who has no superpowers. He calls the team X-Force. Together, the X-Force launches their attack on a convoy that is transporting the icebox prisoners to a new prison by parachuting them out of an airplane. Due to the strong wind, everyone except Deadpool and Domino die trying to land. Domino can get into the convoy, but meets Cable, who attacks Russell. While Deadpool is fighting Cable on the truck, Russell manages to free the giant mutant Juggernaut, with whom he had befriended in the ice box . This devastates the truck, rips off Deadpool's abdomen and flees with Russell. While Deadpool is recovering from Blind Al and his legs, buttocks and genitals are regrowing, he is visited by Cable, who explains his motivation: Russell will enjoy killing in the future after the murder of the director of the orphanage and after a series of killings eventually murder Cable's family. Deadpool agrees to work together on the condition that he gets 30 seconds with Russell to keep him from the murder and guide him on the right track.

Deadpool, Cable, and Domino arrive at the orphanage to stop Russell and the Juggernaut, but struggle with the giant mutant's apparent superiority. Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and their friend Yukio come to their rescue. While the three now face the Juggernaut, Cable and Deadpool can catch up with Russell and try to stop him. Deadpool puts the collar on himself to suppress his healing powers and offer himself in place of the headmaster. Russell continues to seek to assassinate the director. Cable shoots Russell, but Deadpool jumps in between and is hit in the heart. After a long death scene, he eventually dies, rescuing Russell, who loses his desire for revenge. This will save Cable's family in the future. Deadpool's death allows him to meet again with Vanessa in the afterlife, although she tells him once again that it is not his time yet. Since Cable feels remorse, he does not use the remaining energy of his time travel device to travel to his family in the future, but instead goes back to the beginning of the fight, where he discreetly took the Skee Ball token that he had previously taken from Deadpool. over his heart and so stop the deadly bullet. The director of the orphanage is run over by Dopinder, who is given the alias Brown Panther by Deadpool.

During the credits, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio repair Cable's time travel device and then give it to Deadpool. In this way, he can save Vanessa and Peter from death. He also shoots his own version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to straighten the timelines and kills actor Ryan Reynolds after reading and approving the script for Green Lantern . Furthermore, Deadpool meets Adolf Hitler as a baby in "Super Duper $ @%! # & Cut" and tells him that he will come back with Cable, who loves to kill children.

Even before the release of Deadpool , Simon Kinberg revealed in September 2015 that there were talks about a sequel. In early 2016, shortly after the previous film was released, Fox announced the decision that work on Deadpool 2 was already underway. Lead actor Ryan Reynolds was given a say in the design of Deadpool 2 . As a result of creative differences with director Tim Miller , the latter dropped out of production. David Leitch was signed as a replacement in November 2016 . With Miller, the composer Junkie XL also dropped out of production. He was replaced by the composer Tyler Bates .

Filming began on June 17, 2017 at Hatley Castle, Victoria . Main filming started on June 26, 2017 in Vancouver under the working title Love Machine . The shooting ended on October 14, 2017. During the shooting, the stunt woman Joi Harris had a fatal accident. Due in connection therewith security breaches on the set was against the production company TCF Vancouver Productions Ltd from WorkSafeBC a fine of around 290,000 dollars imposed.

The film was released in German cinemas on May 17, 2018 and in American cinemas the following day .

Reviews

Deadpool 2 was able to convince 83 percent of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and got a Metascore of 66 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Daniel Krüger from the Musikexpress explains that Deadpool 2 falls into the usual sequel trap, in which there is more comic allusions, action and blood according to the "higher, faster, further" principle. As a result, the viewer forgets "that the plot, in which Deadpool has to keep a small, incredibly badly played boy from doing bad deeds, is just as worn out as some jokes from the first part, which are simply varied here again". You try to establish more plot, but the high frequency of the jokes destroy the good elements, so at the end of the film you no longer know what happened in the first act. Josh Brolin and some guest appearances by Hollywood stars are positively highlighted , whereas "the rest [...] is actually interchangeable and uninspired".

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online states that you can clearly feel the absence of Tim Miller , who was a decisive factor for the success of the first part: “The script is [...] full of sayings and absurd ideas that there is no space to create a really playful dynamic. ”In addition to the fact that the film with the digitally upgraded battle scenes hardly differs from other superhero films, it is negatively emphasized that“ Reynolds' one-man show […] hardly any to profile the numerous old and new players ”. Only Josh Brolin develops depth and presence, which is why he feels like a foreign body in the film, also because of his lack of satire.

Antje Wessels from Filmstarts sees Deadpool 2 as a "very stylishly staged action comedy". With David Leitch there are hand-made action scenes, completely new perspectives and an irresistible dynamic, which together with the solid computer effects make the film a lot more refined than its predecessor. However, Wessels also notes that it is no longer easy for Ryan Reynolds to joke over the weak plot, which is still full of pop culture references. The jokes, in which Reynolds pulls at all sorts of things, are funny and lively, but the "meta-scam" sometimes seems a bit tired.

Helena Ceredov from Kino.de thinks that the film does what it promises. He used "routinely the formula for success of the first part", but made everything much more insane, brutal and intense, with which he would elicit laughter from the audience every minute. Although the film is very daring, a real weakness is the plot that has been seen a thousand times. "This time too, the greasy plot about responsibility and family is only worth a side note," says Ceredov. In addition, the plot jumps too much from one place to another, making it more like a series of skits than a coherent film. However, the performances of Josh Brolin , who is a welcome contrast to Ryan Reynolds, Zazie Beetz and Rob Delaney are praised. In conclusion, Ceredov draws that Deadpool 2 is a conventional superhero film and not an innovative masterpiece, but creates a big grin for anyone who does not have too high demands.

Gross profit

So far, it has posted worldwide box office earnings of 785.05 million US dollars , making it 97th (as of August 8, 2020) among the financially most successful films of all time and 9th among the most successful films of 2018 . He was able to bring in 324.59 million US dollars in North America alone. In the German cinemas, he was able to earn 24.22 million US dollars. In the opening week, it was able to record around 993,000 visitors in the local cinemas, displacing Avengers: Infinity War from the top of the German cinema charts . Super Duper $ @%! # & Cut

Shortly after the film opened in theaters, it became known that an extended version was being worked on, which should appear in stores. This should have more jokes and more scenes with dominoes. This cut version was shown for the first time on July 21, 2018 at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 , there under the title Deadpool 2: Uncut . The Super Duper $ @%! # & Cut has been available in digital stores in the USA since August 7, 2018 and on Blu-ray , but not on DVD, since August 21, 2018 . In German-speaking countries, this version was released on September 27th on Blu-ray with German synchronization. The extended version is about 15 minutes longer and offers alternative footage or alternative jokes instead of those from the theatrical version for some scenes. The $ @%! # & In the title is a censored paraphrase for the term fucking .

Once Upon a Deadpool

In October 2018 it was announced that a child-friendly PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 is planned for Christmas 2018 , which will only come to US cinemas on December 21, 2018, because Alita: Battle Angel has been postponed to next year and thereby the December date became free. This version of the film is said to contain 15 minutes of newly shot scenes and a new character. Filming began at the end of August 2018 with Reynolds and other actors who were not named. According to the BBC's Lizo Mzimba , the title should have been The Deadpool Before Christmas , a reference to the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas . By releasing a child-friendly version, the studio is said to have hoped for the start of the film on the Chinese film market.

In November 2018 it was announced that the title of the version will be Once Upon a Deadpool and that it will be shown in US cinemas for almost two weeks from December 12, 2018 until Christmas Eve . In this version, Fred Savage, as an adult, is told the story of Deadpool 2 by Wade Wilson alias Deadpool, with scenes harmful to young people not appearing or only defused. The new, defused scenes had to be shot in one day. Overall, the version should be three minutes shorter than the original. The trailer for the cut version was released on November 19, 2018. The title contains the English expression of the famous fairy tale phrase " Once upon a time ... ". The distributor Fox confirmed that the film will appear on various streaming platforms on January 15, 2019, but that a home video release is not yet planned. On the same day, the film was announced in the US as a Blu-ray DVD combo and digital. In January 2019, during a promotional tour for the release of Deadpool 2 in the Chinese film market, Reynolds confirmed that a third Deadpool film was already in the works and should be completely different from its predecessor.
