In the film stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale racers Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles .

action

In order to make the Ford brand more popular with the post-war generation , Henry Ford II wants to invest more in racing and therefore tries to take over Ferrari, which dominates the prestigious Le Mans 24-hour race . When Enzo Ferrari rudely refuses the offer, the angry Ford decides to beat Ferrari at Le Mans instead and commissions the last American winner of the race, Carroll Shelby, to develop a corresponding vehicle. Shelby wants to hand over the coordination of the prototype of the Ford GT40 , which was produced in England at short notice, to the British racing driver and vehicle engineer Ken Miles , but this is viewed with suspicion from Detroit, as Miles is seen as a hot head and therefore does not fit the brand values. Miles was not nominated as a driver for the 1964 race and had to watch from a distance how the vehicles used were driven beyond their limits and ultimately all were eliminated and a Ferrari once again won. As a result, the GT40 is further developed by Shelby and Miles. Shelby offers Ford a bet that if Miles wins the Daytona 24 Hours , he will be nominated for Le Mans. Although Ford is now starting a second team there, Miles manages to win and is finally allowed to compete in Le Mans.

After a few problems at the start and tough duels with the Ferraris, Miles finally managed to break away from the front and drove towards an undisputed victory. But Henry Ford II has other plans: he wants to finish the race with three GT40s that cross the finish line in parallel. Shelby and Miles submit to Ford's wish, assuming that all three would be declared victorious. After the triumphant entry, however, Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon are surprisingly honored, as they have covered a longer distance overall due to their poor starting position. Although Miles realizes that he has been cheated again by Ford, he devotes himself to the further development of the GT40. He dies soon after during a test drive.

Historical background

In 1962 the AC Cobra , as the racing driver and sports car designer Carroll Shelby called his creation, went into series production. The low vehicle weight in connection with the power of the Ford V8 resulted in a performance against which the competition had no chance. On the racetrack and on the road. With this design he had achieved something that few other designers had achieved before him. Shelby had combined simple, comparatively undemanding high-volume technology into a package that drove much more expensive and much more sophisticated cars to the ground. From then on, all doors were open to Shelby at Ford, and he was allowed to lay hands on anything that had the blue brand crest and was supposed to be sporty. And so Shelby was not only responsible for Ford's motorsport projects, but also for hot versions of Ford's most successful high-volume product at the time, the Ford Mustang .

In the 1966 Le Mans race, Ford eventually ousted Ferrari. In addition, the Ford winning vehicles, with an average speed of 210.8 km / h, achieved an average of more than 200 km / h over the entire race for the first time.

In the same year, Ken Miles had an accident during a test drive with one of the Ford J-Car prototypes - which were used as the Ford GT40 MK IV in 1967 in the major sports car races - in Riverside . Carroll Shelby died in May 2012 at the age of 89.

Christian Bale at the premiere for the film at the Toronto International Film Festival

The film critic Antje Wessels writes that the script focuses on the human factor in this story from the start. Carroll Shelby will be forced to end his racing career overnight and will decide to go behind the scenes of the auto circus, while Ken Miles will be established in a few scenes as a hard-to-handle bully who will prove difficult to work with. Nevertheless, the relationship between the two men is based on deep sympathy and thus underpins the competition between Ford and Ferrari with heart and soul, continued Wessels. His wife and son Peter made Ken Miles not just a highly committed racing driver, but also a family man who always puts the well-being of his loved ones above his passion. With an incredible attention to detail, James Mangold succeeds in capturing car racing as a physically strenuous sport, as cameraman Phedon Papamichael captures furious, overview of the racing events in equal parts of the race track, Christian Bale's strained face in close-up and repeatedly between shots of The steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals as well as joysticks jump back and forth in order to link the behavior of the car on the racetrack directly with the actions of the driver. The three-person film editor trio, consisting of Andrew Buckland , Michael McCusker and Dirk Westervelt, finally merged the whole thing into a prime example of an equally energetic and tempo-accelerating, but never confusing cut that optimally underlines the heated atmosphere in the situation. Wessels sums up: "Big pictures, a surprising amount of humor and two great leading actors make James Mangold's racing drama one of the best films of the year."

Gross profit

The budget of around 97.6 million US dollars is offset by worldwide revenues of 225.5 million US dollars so far, of which the film alone has grossed 117.6 million in North America. In Germany it has 376,150 visitors.
