The qualification for the Africa Cup 2015 began on April 12, 2014 and ended on November 19, 2014. Since 2013, this qualification has not also served as a World Cup qualification.
The South Sudan participated for the first time in its history part in the qualification for Africa Cup.
mode
After three preliminary rounds in the knockout system, the group phase started with 7 groups of 4 teams each. The first two of each group as well as the best third of the group qualified alongside the host for the Africa Cup 2015. The group phase ran from September 5 to November 19, 2014. The draw for the final round took place on December 3.
Morocco was originally intended to be the host. However, the CAF withdrew its host role from the Moroccan association , as it had refused to host the cup as planned in early 2015 due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa . The Moroccan national football team was disqualified. The new host was Equatorial Guinea, whose team had originally been disqualified in the qualification.
The national teams from Djibouti and Somalia did not take part in the qualification.
1 round
The four worst-placed teams played the two winners in the first and second leg, which progressed to the second round. The first leg took place on April 12, the second leg on April 20, 2014.
On March 30, 2014, the Eritrean Football Association announced that it would withdraw its team from the competition. Thus, South Sudan reached the second round without a fight.
2nd round
The two winners from the first round and a further 26 teams played 14 winners in the first and second leg, which progressed to the third round.
The draw took place on April 27th.
The first legs of the second round were scheduled for May 17 and 18, and the second legs for May 30 to June 1, 2014.
1The selection of Equatorial Guinea was excluded from further qualification by the African Football Association due to the use of an ineligible player (
Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta ).
3The first leg was played in the
Congolese capital
Brazzaville due to the uncertain political situation in the Central African Republic .
4thGambia was excluded from all CAF competitions for two years because five players who were too old were deliberately used in a qualifying game for the
U-20 Africa Cup 2015 against Liberia.
5The second leg was played in the
Sudanese capital
Khartoum due to the uncertain political situation in South Sudan .
3rd round
The 14 teams from the second round played the seven winners who qualified for the group stage in the first and second leg. The first legs took place on July 19 and 20, 2014. The second legs were played on August 2 and 3, 2014.
1Rwanda was qualified for the next round due to the success in the
penalty shootout , but had used the ineligible player
Daddy Birori in the second game and was consequently disqualified.
2 Seychelles has withdrawn.
Group stage
28 teams in 7 groups of 4 teams each took part in the group stage. The 21 best-placed teams in Africa were directly qualified for the group stage. Then there were the 7 winners from the third round. The first two of each group as well as the best group third qualified alongside hosts Equatorial Guinea for the Africa Cup 2015.
