The team qualified for the World Cup in South Africa through the qualifying games of the South American football association CONMEBOL .
All ten teams that belonged to the South American association CONMEBOL played against each other in a single group stage with a home and away leg, with a total of 18 matches. The four best-placed teams qualified directly for the finals of the 2010 World Cup. Uruguay finished fifth in the CONMEBOL against the fourth in the CONCACAF qualification Costa Rica with an overall result of 2: 1 from the two legs, the last place in the World Cup .
