BW

Goldegg , also Goldegg im Pongau , is a municipality with 2574 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of St. Johann im Pongau in the Salzburger Land in Austria .

geography

Goldegg im Pongau with the Goldegger See

Goldegg lies above the Salzach in the Salzburg region. It is the westernmost and thus the uppermost of the communities in the Salzach Valley belonging to the Pongau district . Lend (Salzburg) in Pinzgau lies upstream , and Schwarzach im Pongau downstream . Goldegg is located on the north side of the Salzach mainly in two valleys whose streams flow east of the municipal area in the Salzach: The Seebach entfließt the 5 ha large Lake Goldegg in the central town Goldegg. The longer Wenger Bach flows north and parallel to it. The farms of Hasling and Schattau are scattered on the ridge between the two valleys.

history

On a slope terrace above the Salzach between Schwarzach and Taxenbach, a Celtic - Roman hill settlement of the Ambisonts from the Latène period was found. From here a pass road led through the Gastein Valley to Teurnia in Carinthia . The settlement was protected on two sides by broken rocks, the other two sides had a dry stone wall with a gate system for defense. The settlement was also used in Roman times until at least AD 200. Numerous Celtic iron arrowheads deformed by impact and shield bosses with damage from blows indicate warlike events in and around the complex. A temporal connection to the Roman conquest of the area can be assumed to be certain based on the dating of the finds. The found objects are now in the Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum .

Goldegg Castle, presumably built in the 14th century, was converted into a KuK Rentamts building in 1821 and the former castle chapel was converted into a bailiff's house. Until 1854 the castle was the seat of the Salzburg nursing court clerk . In 1856, Emperor Franz Josef donated the interior of the knight's hall to the Carolino Augusteum Museum.

In 1850 the communities Goldegg and Weng were founded. Weng was incorporated into Goldegg in 1938.

The Goldegg deserters

At the time of National Socialism and World War II , some local opponents of the regime and deserters, more or less led by Karl Rupitsch , banded together and hid from the National Socialists in the nearby mountains . They were linked by the conviction that they had nothing in common with the National Socialists and that they did not want to be involved in their atrocities. The local Gestapo searched in vain for the "Goldegg deserters" several times. Only when she a Halleiner SS - battalion called for help to the deserters to find they were finally successful. Most of them were then deported to concentration camps, while two more, the Hochleitner brothers, were murdered on their backs by two notoriously cruel SS men near the Böndlsee .

At that time the Goldeggers were divided about the deserters. This is still partly the case today. In Goldegg the majority spoke out against them, in the current district of Weng the majority in favor of the deserters. It was not until the summer of 2018 that the local council decided to rewrite that part of the local chronicle that deals with these events - in which the deserters are referred to as "land plagues". After a long discussion between surviving relatives and victims and the rest of the population, copper memorial plaques were placed on the two pillars of the cemetery entrance in the summer of 2014, and a memorial stone was unveiled a little later. The memorial stone is located on the area of the Goldegg Rehabilitation Center (the regional health insurance fund, today ÖGK) after the municipality had not approved its installation in the courtyard.

In September 2018, this memorial was desecrated by previously unknown perpetrators. The events were published in 2018 novel Sweden tab of Hanna Sukare processed.

Detailed information about the Goldegg deserters and the memorial stone can be found on the homepage of the "Association of Friends of the Deserters Monument in Goldegg - Platform for Regional Culture of Remembrance".

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is: "In the red field a golden corner (tip), covered with a red dragon head and accompanied on both sides by a golden crown." Originally the coat of arms consisted only of the red segments and the gold-colored piece, Lindwurm and crowns originate from the coat of arms of the extinct Schernberg family , the parts were only integrated into the coat of arms by the Grafs.
