Sumiswald is a municipality in the Emmental administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
geography
Sumiswald comprises two parishes and three localities (Sumiswald, Grünen and Wasen) in the lower Emmental and, with an area of 5933 hectares, is one of the largest parishes in the canton. The population is around 5000 (as of 2013).
The community of Sumiswald is located in the upper catchment area of the Greens with its source streams Hornbach and Churzeneibach and its tributary Griesbach.
history
The origin of the name Sumiswald, which was first mentioned in a document around 1130, is controversial. Whether the name was derived from the Latin "summa vallis" or from a Germanic settler "Suomoldt" could not be found out. In any case, Sumiswald was once a rule with its own nobility.
The historic village center of Sumiswald is classified as of national importance. The village has a special quality due to its terrace location between Griesbach and the river Grüene. The village center is organized by a system of streets at right angles and has a high density of high-quality buildings. The Marktgasse is characterized by late baroque shopkeepers, imposing inns, residential buildings and merchants' offices, all of which are surrounded by spacious gardens.
At the foot of the terrace of Sumiswald lies the green part of the village , which is characterized by many commercial buildings.
At the confluence of the Hornbach and the Kurzeneibach, the village of Wasen forms the center of the eastern municipality with its extensive hinterland.
Since it developed mainly along the streams, a three-armed village appears today. The extensive scattered settlement area mainly includes rural buildings. In addition to groups of farms and hamlets, sedate Emmental farmhouses as individual farms are the rule in the heavily structured and hilly terrain.
The parish of Wasen, which previously belonged to the Sumiswald, became independent in 1878. The church with a striking front tower was built in 1881. Both churches are integrated in the village and have been professionally restored and renewed in recent years.
The school system has an old tradition and began in 1559 with a foundation, followed by the construction of a school house in Sumiswald (1683) and in Wasen (1705). The Sumiswald secondary school, founded in 1834, is one of the oldest in the canton of Bern. Today, both parishes each have an upper school center and a total of five primary school districts with school buildings in Sumiswald, Schonegg, Wasen, Fritzenhaus and Ried.
