With around 5000 inhabitants, Warthausen is one of the largest rural communities in the Baden-Württemberg district of Biberach .

Geographical location

Warthausen is 4 km north of Biberach an der Riss and 38 km south of Ulm . The southern Danube tributary Riss flows through the community.

Community structure

The municipality of Warthausen consists of the main town of Warthausen with Oberhöfen and Röhrwangen as well as the suburbs of Birkenhard and Höfen with Barabein, Galmutshöfen, Herrlishöfen, Rappenhof and Rißhöfen.

As the successor to Franz Wohnhaas, who had been in office since 1987 and no longer ran for election, Cai-Ullrich Fark was elected Mayor of Warthausen in 2003. Fark was a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen at the time of application . However, he left The Greens in October 2008 and joined the CDU in December 2008 . This was preceded by differences of opinion about the future of the Hauptschule . On October 17, 2010, he was replaced by Wolfgang Jautz (independent). With 53.73 percent of the vote, Jautz prevailed against the incumbent, who only got 46.02 percent of the vote. The turnout was 62.9 percent. On October 14, 2018, Jautz was re-elected with 60.7 percent of the vote against two competitors, Christian Koch (26.8%) and Andreas Reiner (9.9%). The turnout was 56.5 percent.

Municipal council

In Warthausen the municipal council is elected according to the procedure of the false partial choice. The number of local councils can change due to overhang mandates . The municipal council consists of the elected voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. The local elections on May 26, 2019 led to the following final result. The turnout was 62.5% (2014: 52.8%).

Warthausen is located on the Württemberg Southern Railway Ulm - Friedrichshafen . Regional trains have been running here every hour since 2001. The former train station served as a button museum. The tariff of the Donau-Iller local transport network applies between Ulm and Bad Schussenried .

The connection to the Neu-Ulm motorway triangle is via the four-lane federal highway 30 .

The Öchsle cycle path to Ochsenhausen begins in Warthausen and runs parallel to the route of the Öchsle cable car in parts.

Museums

  • The button museum in the former station building was opened in spring 1999. The exhibition was closed in March 2018. (Report in Regio-TV , January 17, 2018)
  • The " Oechsle ", a narrow gauge - museum railway , runs from May to October on weekends, and there are special rides on the route Warthausen-Ochsenhausen.

Buildings

The Warthausen Castle (16th century) was since 1696 in the possession of the counts of the stadium . It was acquired by Wilhelm von König-Warthausen in 1829 . The castle was inhabited by numerous personalities from history, including Count Anton Heinrich Friedrich von Stadion , Christoph Martin Wieland , Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder , Sophie von La Roche , and Friedrich Karl von Koenig-Warthausen . Since 1985 the castle and estate have been owned by Franz Freiherr von Ulm zu Erbach .

The Warthausen Brewery (founded in 1632; closed in 1970) was known as a beer supplier for up to 400 restaurants all over southern Germany and was a popular destination. Today a nursing home is housed in the brewery building.

The CDU member of the Bundestag Julius Steiner (* 1924 in Stuttgart ; † 1997 in Friedberg, Bavaria ) used the bribe he had received for abstaining from the 1972 no-confidence vote against Willy Brandt to finance his single-family home in Warthausen-Oberhöfen (see also Steiner-Wienand affair ).
