Independence Day

Independence Day: Resurgence (original title Independence Day: Resurgence ) is an American science fiction film directed by Roland Emmerich from 2016 by 20th Century Fox . The film was released in US theaters on June 24, 2016. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on July 14, 2016. As with Independence Day (1996), the director was again Roland Emmerich. Independence Day: Return follows on from the plot of the first part, with several actors such as Jeff Goldblum , Bill Pullman , Brent Spiner and Vivica A. Fox re-impersonating their roles, but Will Smith no longer.

After the alien invasion in 1996, in which three billion people were killed, the inhabitants of a post-apocalyptic earth are preparing for a new fight against the aliens , as the defeated aliens then sent a signal into space to request support. On Saturn's rings and the moon , whose raw materials are used, outposts were built by humans. From the material that the aliens had left behind in their first attack, machines were built and drive units developed for interplanetary travel. A new planetary defense system based on alien technology is also protecting the earth.

When a spherical spaceship appears at the defense base on the moon, the US President clears it for shooting. After the successful shooting down, David Levinson - now director of Area 51 - suggests investigating the crash site. There they are about to salvage a closed capsule when a much larger ship arrives. It destroys the base of the moon and enters the earth's atmosphere. Due to its enormous size with a diameter of approx. 5,000 km, the mother ship has its own gravity, so that it tears entire cities off the ground when it lands.

For the fight against the aliens, Levinson offers the experience he gained during the first invasion . Levinson is supported by the alienologist Dr. Brakish Okun. Dylan Dubrow-Hiller takes over from his stepfather, Captain Steven Hiller. Former President Whitmore's daughter is engaged to ex- fighter pilot Jake. He lost his parents during the first alien invasion and then completed training in the military.

The first human counter-offensive, led by Hiller, starts from Area 51, which has now been converted into a military base for alien attacks. They find that there is nothing they can do and suffer heavy losses. A small composite penetrates the interior of the ship and is brought down there by an electromagnetic shock wave .

Meanwhile the recovered capsule is being examined by the moon. A spherical space probe is hidden inside. When it is activated, the humans learn of the plans of the attacking aliens. These move from planet to planet in order to obtain energy from their nuclei that they need for their development. Every major operation is controlled by an alien queen. The probe is one of the enemies of the aliens who had now come to help the people. In the past she has played a key role in saving a number of extraterrestrial species that were invaded by the aliens and thereby lost their planet. Before the invasions, the probe carried the survivors to a safe planet through rescue missions. Their mission was to evacuate Earth as well . This makes it an ally of the people. It is the last of its kind.

The activation of the probe is registered by the alien queen, who is now moving with a fleet of hunters in the direction of Area 51 to take possession of the probe. The reason for this is that resistance has slowly built up on the planet with the intergalactic refugees and a counter-offensive is planned. If the aliens got hold of the probe, they could locate the planet and wipe out the resistance fighters. With a diversionary maneuver, the aliens are to be lured on a wrong track. The signal from the probe is copied while it is placed in a containment chamber itself. The plan seems to be working at first: The queen follows the tugboat out into the desert, where cold fusion bombs are supposed to put an end to her. Her spaceship can actually be destroyed (Whitmore flies in with an atomic bomb and blows herself up with the words "Happy 4th of July"), but she survives the explosion with her own protective shield . Her subordinates then circle her in small spaceships and try to protect her. They limit themselves to circling the queen and do not attack the attacking earth pilots (who are clearly in the minority). While trying to get the probe in Area 51 in their possession, the Queen is killed by Hiller and Morrison, whereupon the remaining aliens become leaderless. These leave the earth in their spaceship.

With the knowledge of the space probe, a targeted attack under the direction of humanity against the aliens is now to be started.

History of origin

A revival of the material from the first film from 1996, which grossed over 817 million dollars worldwide, was planned shortly after its unexpected success. However, Dean Devlin, who was in charge of writing the script, stopped work on it and gave the money back because he felt the sequel did not meet the standards of the original. 15 years later, Devlin dared to try again with Roland Emmerich, which got the idea of ​​a sequel rolling again. On June 21, 2015, Emmerich announced that the sequel to his alien film would be titled Independence Day: Resurgence , which means something like "return" , "resurrection" or "resurrection" . Emmerich wanted to make a fresh start with the film and expand the previously known universe. The film, like the first part, should take place in its actual year of release, now 2016.

Shooting, post-production and film budget

Filming began in New Mexico in the spring of 2015 and ended in August 2015. Some of the visual effects were created by the Stuttgart-based VFX company LUXX Studios. The budget for the film was $ 200 million.

Marketing and Publishing

In December 2015 the website warof1996.com went online, on which 20th Century Fox explains not only background information about the film but also the events after the successfully suppressed alien invasion in 1996 and which is structured like a documentation of the events in time. During the Super Bowl on February 7, 2016, 20th Century Fox unveiled a new trailer that featured the American national anthem and was perceived as very patriotic. A month before it opened in theaters, 20th Century Fox finally released one last, almost five-minute trailer for the film. While a speech by President Lanford can be heard in the background, recalling the events of 20 years ago, various characters from the film are faded in. You can see how David Levinson learns early with the help of a highly developed receiver of the imminent arrival of the aliens, how after their arrival something cancels the gravity on earth and people and objects start to float. The scientists learn from an imprisoned alien that it is one of you whose arrival is expected. Finally, short sequences from various battle scenes between the aliens and man-controlled airplanes can be seen.

On June 18, 2016, 20th Century Fox released a nearly two-minute viral promotional video for the film, entitled Heroes of 96: Dr. Okun released. The heroic deeds of the character Dr. Brakish Okun and mentioned it in the same breath as the scientists Carl Sagan , Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein . It also explains how Okun survived the first alien attack.

The film celebrated its world premiere on June 20, 2016 at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles in the presence of many actors and was released in US cinemas on June 24, 2016, almost 20 years to the day after the premiere of the previous film. Reviews

The film only won over 29 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . The consensus there says that the film is undeniably visually impressive, but compared to its predecessor it lacks the emotional power that would advance a doomsday story.

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online is also not convinced by the newcomers among the actors: Emmerich is not able to push the film into the present with this staff rejuvenation. There is no charismatic newcomer among the young actors like Will Smith.

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter thinks the sound and its editing in the film are Oscar-worthy .

Comparison with the previous film

After its US theatrical release, the film was repeatedly compared with the previous film from 1996. Jason Solomons of The Wrap wrote that Resurgence was basically the same as the first film, but bigger. Solomons said there was a lot of plot and backstory floating around like space junk in the film, but nothing that really matters when the new invasion begins. The film also lacks soul, among other things because of the victimless violence shown in it. It feels like nobody ever really dies or gets hurt in it, even though half our planet is being destroyed.

A big problem with Resurgence , according to Collider's Perri Nemiroff , is that nothing feels familiar. Part of the reason why it was such a shock and thrill in the first film when spaceships penetrated the Earth's atmosphere and attacked the big cities was, according to Nemiroff, because everything was highly recognizable - the cities, the monuments and the people too. Before Emmerich destroyed these iconic places, he let you live in them for a while and took the time to highlight a few faces in the crowd before blowing the cities away. Resurgence, on the other hand, gives the viewer no time to acclimatize on the new earth, which makes the destruction and death of people in front of a strange landscape look like the digital wide-angle shots of the Capitol in The Hunger Games .

Compared to the previous film, which was notorious for its pompous American patriotism, Oliver Kaever of DIE ZEIT remarked that the script team had sketched a different world in which the nations had grown together in the face of the alien threat and thanks to their superior technologies worked on a peaceful future. However, this time too, they insisted on quoting 2001 - A Space Odyssey . If it was the “Hello Dave” of the HAL-9000 in the first part , in the current version it is the human-friendly sphere that looks pretty much exactly like the front part of the “Discovery” from “2001”.
