The municipality is located on the southern slope of the Čergov Mountains in the so-called Spiš-Šariš Intermediate Mountains ( Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie in Slovak ). The Jakuboviansky potok flows through Jakubovany in the Torysa catchment area . A small reservoir has been located near the village since 1995. history

The place arose in the 13th century as part of the neighboring town of Šarišské Sokolovce and was named after the founder, nobleman Jakob Poliak. The first written mention (as terra Jacobi ) comes from the year 1314, when the Thököly family received the property through an act of donation. In the 16th century the town of Sabinov (German Zeben ) received half of the place, so the history is closely connected to this town until the abolition of serfdom in 1848. In the 18th century, part of the property came to the Péchy family . In 1828 there were 70 houses and 535 inhabitants, whose main sources of income were agriculture and fruit growing (especially cherry growing).

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
