Jason Mark Lewis (* 23. September 1955 in Waterloo , Black Hawk County , Iowa ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Between 1974 and 1979 Jason Lewis studied education and business management at the University of Northern Iowa . From 1990 to 1992 he was enrolled at the University of Colorado in Denver , where he studied political science. From 1992 he worked as a radio presenter and from 2011 had his own radio show called The Jason Lewis Show . Between 1997 and 2002 he also hosted the television program Twin Cities Public . He is also the author of some political treatises.

In the 1990 election, Lewis ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 2016 election , Lewis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC, in Minnesota's second congressional constituency, against Democrat Angie Craig . There he succeeded John Klines on January 3, 2017 , who was no longer a candidate in 2016.

After narrowly beating Craig in 2016, Lewis' seat was considered particularly vulnerable in the 2018 election . In particular, criticism was raised in July 2018 for misogynist remarks Lewis had made over years on his radio show. He had complained that women were no longer allowed to be called “sluts”. Lewis did not distance himself from these statements and stated that he was paid to be provocative at the time. Shortly afterwards, racist comments from the radio show were discussed; Lewis had accused blacks of waging a racial war against whites and of having a claim and victim mentality that led to violence.
