The 2019/20 season is the twelfth season of the Continental Hockey League , a multinational ice hockey league . The defending champion is HK CSKA Moscow . The league started the season with 24 teams from Kazakhstan , Latvia , Russia , Finland , Belarus and China .
mode
In the regular season , the teams are divided into two conferences and four divisions , with six teams represented in each division. Each team must play a total of 62 games. The team with the most points wins the Continental Cup .
For a win in the regular playing time of 60 minutes, a team receives - as in the NHL - two points, the defeated opponent gets empty. If a team wins in overtime or in the shootout , they also get two points, while the loser still gets one point.
After the regular season, the play-offs for the Gagarin Cup follow , for which the 16 teams with the best points qualify. The division winners occupy the first four positions on the seeding list. All play-off rounds are played in best-of-seven mode.
Attendees
The composition of the league changed compared to the previous year: On May 28, 2019, HC Slovan Bratislava announced that it would withdraw from the KHL for financial reasons for the coming season and submit an application for the domestic extra league. This step had become necessary due to a failed investor contract. In addition, the association had debts of more than one million euros with a subsidiary of the city of Bratislava. Furthermore, the club had accumulated unpaid salaries for players and employees of up to 60 million euros.
Due to the withdrawal of HC Slovan, Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod returned to the Western Conference and Tarasov Division . In order to have equally strong divisions, HK Sibir Novosibirsk moved from the Chernyshov to the Kharlamov Division .
