The women's long jump at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 26 and 27, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

With gold and bronze there were two medals in this competition for the long jumpers from the GDR. The reigning world champion and world record holder Heike Drechsler became the European champion . She won ahead of Galina Tschistjakowa from the USSR. Bronze went to Helga Radtke .

Record improvement

European champion Heike Drechsler improved the existing EM record in the final on August 27 by sixteen centimeters to 7.27 m. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR

qualification

August 26, 1986

Eighteen participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 6.60 m. Nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the three athletes placed next to twelve long jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 6.49 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
