The women's 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 18 and 19, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .

Germany became European champions with the line-up Anke Feller , Uta Rohländer ( final ), Silvia Rieger and Grit Breuer ( final ) as well as Anja Knippel and Martina Breu, who were also used in the preliminary run . Second place went to Russia with Natalja Khrushchelyova , Svetlana Goncharenko , Jekaterina Bachwalowa , Olga Kotlyarova ( final ) and Yekaterina Kulikova, who was also used in the preliminary run . Bronze went to Great Britain with Donna Fraser ( final ), Vicky Jamison , Katherine Merry ( final ) and Allison Curbishley as well as Michelle Thomas and Tasha Danvers, who were also used in the preliminary run .

The runners who were only used in the preliminary run also received the corresponding precious metal.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. With only nine teams involved, only one was eliminated.
