The men's 200-meter race at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 75 and 8, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

World champion became the world championship bronze medalist from 1995 and Olympic bronze medalist from 1996 Ato Boldon from Trinidad and Tobago , who was also Olympic third in the 100 meters in 1996 . The second place went to the World Champion of 1993 , two-time World Cup -Second ( 1991 /1995) and two-time Olympic silver medalist ( 1992 /1996) Frank Fredericks of Namibia , who is also the 100 meters in 1992 and 1996 each Olympic silver had won. Bronze went to the Brazilian Claudinei da Silva .
