The Slovak Matej Tóth became world champion, the Australian Jared Tallent won silver . He won the bronze medal. Japanese Takayuki Tanii

initial situation
The group of favorites for this competition was primarily drawn from the last major international championships. Jared Tallent, the Australian Olympic champion and third place in the World Cup , was there as well as the reigning World Champion and Olympic third party Robert Heffernan from Ireland and Vice European Champion Matej Tóth from Slovakia, who had finished fifth at the last Olympic Games and last World Championships. The Ukrainian World Cup fourth Ihor Hlawan was also part of the circle of goers with a medal chance. In the twenty kilometer competition , he had finished fourth here six days earlier.
Course of competition

The 50 km walk took a rather unusual course. Right from the start, Tóth set the pace and his opponents initially let him pull away. After five kilometers he was eight seconds ahead of a group of sixteen pursuers. After ten kilometers it was almost half a minute before ten pursuers. Toth did not let up and continued to increase the distance. After fifteen kilometers, Tallent was 39 seconds behind the sole pursuit of the leading Slovak. The following group was another ten seconds behind. In the further course Tallent was put back by eight runners behind him. Tóth, on the other hand, was still ahead and at thirty kilometers was already over a minute ahead of a group of seven behind him, those from Heffernan, Tallent, the Japanese Takayuki Tanii, Andrés Chocho from Ecuador, the Japanese Hirooki Arai, Erick Barrondo from Guatemala and the Chinese Zhang Lin insisted.
For the next few kilometers, Tóth was all alone in front, while the chasing group fell apart more and more. Tallent broke away from his competitors for the second time. Heffernan, Li, Tanii and Arai followed just a few seconds after him. For the first time, Tóth's lead has shrunk a little. However, this was only temporary. Five kilometers from the finish, the Slovak was now almost a minute and a half ahead of Tallent, who had further broken away from his pursuers. Only Tanii and Arai were a little more than twenty seconds behind him. Heffernan followed eight seconds behind them. Li, on the other hand, had to be ripped off completely and lost more than a minute on his former companion.
During the last few kilometers nothing changed in the first two places. Matej Tóth confidently brought his developed lead to the world championship title to the finish. Jared Tallent walked 1:45 minutes behind him to the silver medal.
Such a long and successful solo effort as here by Matej Tóth is extremely rare. As a rule, early outliers are made in the further course of the competition, so such attempts are risky and usually do not end with success.
